When a job in Aurora, Ohio is using a firm in California to staff contractors, It's hard to know whether you are dealing with a prospective employer or a cold sales call. They don't even give you the opportunity to be polite, they hang up on you if you try to tell them not to call you anymore.
I have told them I have big dogs that keep the burglars away, but I never thought of the slightly off-balance boy friend who is a gun-nut. I like that too. But I have done a do-not-call list a few years ago. I did not realize you could turn in harassing phone numbers. That sounds interesting.

I look for the area code and if it isn't one of the two local ones, I let it roll over to the answering machine. If I don't recognize the name displayed or the number locally, also to the machine.
One weird thing I've noticed, some calls are from the area code 555. What's with that? I thought 555 was a fake area code that is used in movies so real people with that number don't get hundreds of nuisance calls.

The telemarketers that call us are for the credit card reductions. The number they are calling from constantly changes and is always out of service when you call it. No wonder considering when you look it up in the reverse directory it is usually a residential address.
The house phone and both cell phones are registered on the national DNC list but calling the CRTC to file a complaint is pointless (aside from the banker's hours that they keep). My FAVORITE though, was one nobody answered. We had a call on the call display with the provincial area code. So I called it back figuring it was my sister. Not my sister, cold call sales from ADT but their office was closed. I could leave a message if I wanted to phone them back. So I left my desk phone number for the next day just for a laugh. Next day comes, the same number pops up so I answer the phone, "Securtek Monitoring Solutions, how may I help you today?" Dead silence on the other end of the phone for a good 30 seconds then the sales rep says, "Oooh, I guess you don't need an alarm system then." Me: "Not unless you can beat $3/month." What I would not give to have seen his face. |

My unsolicited calls have dropped significantly since the election, I only get one or two a week now. Today's was for a "free water testing service" which is another ad for selling water softners. I hang up on all of them!!! If it's a human I tell them to take my name off their list and then hang up!!! WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE DO NOT CALL LIST????

I don't call 911 at this house.
When seconds count, the police are only minutes away. Never mind the dog, beware of the owner.

The do not call list doesn't help if the company already
has a relationship with you. By dint of much effort, we've gotten it whittled down some, but I don't hope to ever have it go away completely. The most annoying ones now are the ones that say THIS IS SUCH AND SUCH COMPANY, THERE IS NO PROBLEM WITH YOUR CURRENT ACCOUNT" and then go one to try and talk you into a better rate or whatever AND they tell you "THIS IS YOUR SECOND AND FINAL NOTICE" well the first time I heard that (months ago!) I thought yippee only to discover that EVERY call now is my second and final notice!! (And btw, sending stuff to answering machine doesn't work, at least for me, because they hang up and don't leave a msg.!)

I love those calls!! It goes like this:
Hello Mr.... Nope, Hold on, Ill get him. I lay the phone down and go back to what I was doing until I hear the loud tone that says, hang up the phone...hes gone. Now instead of him waisting my time, I waisted his. In his line of work time is money. With this method you never have to talk to anyone you dont know or want to talk to.

I have a friend that used to love to get these calls. He would get real quiet and then ask "what are you wearing?" If the person on the other end actually tried to keep going he would then say "you sound hot. Describe what you look like." That usually did the trick. They would hang up.
