Please help me out here! My boss' father passed away this morning and the funeral is on Thursday. I have worked for my boss for ten years (next week). I am 28 years old and he is in his 50s so he's like a father figure (he's my parents' age and the only "real" boss I've ever had since all I've done is babysitting before I started at my current job). Despite the age gap I'm actually second in the hierarchy on our team at work, so I feel like I should make arrangements to send a flower arrangement from our team. I've never done this before (only chipped in when others have done it) and don't even know what to do. We are in MI and the deceased is in NJ. Do you have to find a floral shop there and make arrangements or is that something the funeral home can setup for you? I'm so naive about this stuff!

I know here local floral shops will make arrangements out of town for you, you can also order online.

You have several options. You should be able to call a local flower shop and have them make the arrangements to have it delivered. This way you would have more visual options to choose from. You could look online for teleflora or ftd, pick an arrangement and they will take care of the delivery. That's probably more expensive. Or call the funeral home and ask for florists in the area. The first two options would be the easiest.

Thanks guys! Sorry seems like such a dumb thing but it struck me I've only ever chipped in an never experienced this myself. The other members of my team are younger than I am (not by much) but haven't worked with us nearly as long so I feel like it's something I should do.

It's not a dumb question! You can send plants instead of flowers as well. Or things like stones or garden angels. Someone sent a Stairway to Heaven verse on a stone to my brother's funeral. Stop in at your local florist and they can help you.

Did you look at the deceased's obituary? I wonder if there is a charity you could donate to in lieu of flowers...or what their suggestions were. Some don't want flowers. A friend of mine sent flowers for her nieces service, then when she attended the funeral noticed there were none from her. She asked the funeral home if they were ever delivered and they were still in the back hall, never even put out on display. And knowing her, it wasn't a small arrangement.

There is something listed but honestly the three of us wouldn't be able to make more than a marginal contribution and we want to express our sympathy to our boss and his family, if that makes sense. We don't actually know the deceased.

Sounds good, I'll go tomorrow if they are open. I know of a place by the mall and will be out that way after lunch with Grandpa.

Almost any of the online flower places - like FTD - will be able to help you.
You order what you want through them and they handle getting a local shop to deliver it.

Hope I did this right. I ordered a peace lily planter arrangement from FTD and am having it delivered today (12/31). The visitations are on 1/2 but 1/1 delivery was not available being a holiday and the first visitation is early afternoon so I want to make sure it gets there.
