No experience with the Tom Tom. Have a 5 inch garmin and unlike my old one it constantly falls off the windshield so I have to use dash mount but I love the larger screen.
I use Garmins mainly because I can steal the map updates for my Garmin Base Camp software on the computer. I have not had any ads pop up on mine with free lifetime map updates though.

I have the 1490LMT.
One thing I miss from my older 265WT? (I think) is the name of the next road on the top of the screen when I am driving without using the directions. I liked that feature. Now it just says "driving on x road", not "y road ahead". I love the lane assist though the little 3D "image" of any given exit is kind of silly since it is generic. Traffic is a little better than the old version (better receiver/info recieved by FM antenna) and the frequent map updates are wonderful and quick. FWIW I have been impressed with the speed limit information BUT some speed trap areas, surprise surprise the signs do not match the GPS. Hmmmmmm. Husband got a ticket in one of those zones. I was with him. I would still like to have a way, though to pre route my maps exactly how I want them o go! (for example send a google map to my device and have the actual route I want to take upload, not just the point a and point b and how the GPS thinks I could go. No matter what I want to do, seems the thing really thinks I want to see the one lane macadam surface side roads when I prefer interstates and paved secondary, not residential roads! But you can't beat them when you get a search call at midnight to go someplace out in the middle of nowhere. I usually rely on entering coordinates for some of those locations.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 1450. I love it. I sprung the extra $25 and got the model with lifetime maps. Very much worth it.
It is so simple even my father has been able to use it. His only issue with it was between Ajax, ON and home is that it wanted him to cross over to the USA in Sault St. Marie. Not something he wanted to try in a vehicle with dealership plates. One thing I did notice is that I tend to "talk" back to it. Garmin says, "Recalculating." Me, "Well hurry up about it." Garmin, "Turn right on X drive." Me, "Little late for that." Garmin, "Recalculating." And so the conversation goes. |
