I have 2 of each. I do not have any issues with them at all.
I did have another male cat that did not get along with my oldest male cat, both were dominant personalities. My mom has one of them now. I think it depends on the cat.

I have 2 males indoors and they love each other, they sleep in the same bed, and I have a male and female littermates in the barn, they tooget along great, all are fixed. I personally feel like with dogs, that males are easier to have of the same sex.

My daughter took littermates, one male, one female from a litter of barn cats. They love each other dearly and are totally compatible. My next door neighbour has 6 indoor cats, 5 boys and a girl acquired at different times and different ages. The also are fine together so as others have said, it all depends on the cats' personalities.
