According to a lot of tests gsds can only run at 30mph and these are very athletic working dogs at top speeds. Police dogs max out at like 32mph the best of the best fit ones on some threads i have read where they have used a radar on some dogs. THat is insane because house cats average the same! The exact same! with siamese and egyptian maus averaging higher. OF course the cat will tire faster but in a fast sprint the cat is the same speed.

Why would they run any faster? They are saving energy by only going as fast as needed to catch the cats.
See how smart our dogs are?!

Have you ever seen a greyhound go full speed? Your GSD wouldn't stand a chance. Remember, top speed is only for a little while. So a dog can go much faster, much longer than a cat, but they probably do have around the same top speed. Each breed has their own characteristics, a GSD is faster than a husky on short distances, but naturally a husky is better over long distances.
Cats are very fast over short distances, and therefor the top speed is quite high, I wonder what a sustained speed would be over a mile though.

i was just talking about common dogs not racing dogs or seight hounds jjust normal dogs that chase balls
EXCEPT my dog was able to catch a afgan hound sometimes which she use to play with and they are like a sight hound also BUt the bengal, mau and siamese have a higher top speed than a gsd of over 36 miles an hour that is insane. EVEN if it is short distance. cats are so tiny Last edited by pets4life; 11-25-2012 at 07:08 PM. |

I trained a normal sized male GSD to run under 4 seconds in flyball and that is FAST for any breed especially a GSD. He's the fastest GSD in our flyball league in North America. However flyball is a short distance and involves a lot more than just running a dead sprint. I don't know how fast he runs (mph) but he did beat me on a bike, I was pedaling as hard as I could and he caught up, and then ran past me.
