Please update on you and Hurricane Sandy - Page 4

I'm in NW NJ...the wind is starting to pick up, and there's some light rain, but nothing crazy yet.
I'm surprised we still have power. We lose power when the weather is nice! But I doubt it will last long. We're ready - bathtubs are filled, and everything that can hold water is also filled outside. My chickens are in a pen in the basement. They aren't thrilled, it's crowded, but they're safe.

The power company called on Saturday, said to be prepared to be out of power for 10 days. At least they are being proactive!

We're in Columbia, just south of Baltimore, MD. It's raining and getting windy here, but so far no trees down (we are surrounded by big trees so fingers crossed) and we still have power. Everything is charged up though just in case. It's getting worse as the day goes on and we are supposed to get wind gust 75+ mph by the evening. I'm hunkered down for now with the kids and pets, Hubby is a firefighter and at work until tomorrow morning.

We place important paperwork, meds, dog's medical records etc. in plastic garbage bag. Then we put the bag into a cooler. Then we tape up the cooler. The theory is if we have to evacuate, we have everything in a sealed container, that floats. Although we haven't had to use it yet, the cooler has served as a seat in the hall way when we are hunkered down.

Has anyone's animals been acting strange because of the hurricane? The dogs here were a little restless,but are back to normal now.

We are staying where we are for now. I went out to the stream across the street and it is flooding but I feel ok about it's level. We had a very dry summer so the ground should have some absorption capability. We live in the woods so the trees around our house make me nervous. Our other property is in the big town just north of us...still in the major hit zone but on a grid that is never allowed to be without power. We can drive there if needed. Our property on the creek is mostly flooded. We figure staying off the roads is important right now. I also feel like we are a more direct shot to the childrens' hospital from here. Girl has a genetic disorder so we have to be careful with her fever.

2pm, rainy now, still high winds, seems like the towns around me are way worse than we are right now..

Hey Diane... not sure if you use cl&p, but here's a way you can tell how bad the power outages are in your town if you didn't know about this already.

We have been out of power since noon and not at the worst. With five dogs and two kids, I will need a vacation when this is over!!
