Default I got a Mac. I got a Mac!!

I am so excited. I bought a Mac today. I have been wanting one for the last couple of years. Several months ago, my PC (a Sony VAIO) started to suddenly dump memory and go to a blue screen which required me to just turn it off and then back on. I was told the mother board was going so I started seriously looking at the Macs and talking to people and researching it. Well, today I bought it.

I absolutely LOVE it. I am still getting used to the OS X Lion but so far it has been nothing but easy to use. The screen is a-freaking-mazing. I can't wait to take some of the classes at the Apple store and really learn some cool things to do with it.

Anybody else love theirs this much?

I bought my Mac at Best Buy and they told me that I didn't need any virus protection so I have not used any in the year I have had it and haven't had any problems. Do you other Mac users have virus protection on yours?

I don't have any virus protection. I talked to quite a few other users who say that you don't need it. I then talked to the guy at the Apple store who said the same thing. He said that if I wanted it they would install Norton for me though. Macs don't get viruses though. Nobody I know who has one has ever had one. It is basically "security through obscurity" plus the way they build their OS.

I am using Firefox though which I know offers some protection.

A big part of my job is cleaning viruses off student laptops and yes, we do get Macs in. They aren't really "viruses" like what used to be worms and trojans that came through security holes in the operating system or software, but both Macs and PCs get crap on them that redirect your browsers to ads or pop up warnings trying to get you to purchase something. That said, antivirus software offers little protection for this type of malware and "scareware" because it's stuff that the user has inadvertently allowed to install by clicking an ad or visiting a malicious web site.

That is good to know. I do use Firefox and Adbloc Plus so I never see any ads. I am careful about the websites I go to as well. I used Kaspersky antivirus on my PC and I really liked it. Should I get it for this computer as well? The guy at Apple said they recommended Norton but I prefer Kaspersky. Honestly, I don't even know if it is available for a mac but if it is and I need an antivirus that is the one I would want to go with. What do you recommend?
