If you get tatoos from the legs to your head you should think about the consequences before you do it. I am not surprised that it is very hard for him to find a job.

Yes, things are changing but they are changing slowly.

I have found that many people that criticize like that are very miserable human beings. They hate that others are not as miserable as they are..so they lash out to try to make them miserable, too. I would just move on and let this person live their miserable life. Too bad he doesn't realize that it's not what people wear or not wear that is significant but what is in their hearts. Like you said...you have gotten many pleasant comments regarding the piercings. Sooooo, chew...enjoy the good and spit out the bad.

That all said, I have to admit that I kinda agree with the sentiment.

While I love tattoos (I have seven) and I think piercings are alright (I don't have any currently but had some parts pierced in the past), I think that facial piercings and tattoos on the face, head, neck, or hands, present an unprofessional appearance in a professional work environment. I wouldn't mind it at an alternative store, like Hot Topic, or a tattoo shop, for example, but I think it looks unprofessional if you're, say, a store clerk, pharmacy tech, veterinarian, EMT, etc.
I agree with this. I think they way he handled it was completely uncalled for. If he had a problem with the presentation of employees then he should have talked to your manager about it. You were simply doing what is allowed.

I personally don't think facial piercings look professional or have a place in most work environments (tattoo shops, hot topic, etc. would be the exceptions). It's actually the reason I don't have a nose ring. I would like one, but I'll be graduating from college soon so I feel that ship has sailed. That said, I have a very large tattoo, but I keep it hidden. It covers my ribcage, so unless I decide to become a stripper it shouldn't be a problem. Well, I guess it probably wouldn't be a problem then either lol. I also have a navel ring. Again, it can be hidden. It's a little hazardous sometimes though with jumping dogs too. I have been brought to my knees before by a dog jumping up and catching my belly button ring lol But I digress...

Overall, you're not responsible for decisions management makes, so he was talking to the wrong person.

Working retail is like living on an ALIEN PLANET!!! I don't understand it. There are so many complete idiots! Its like when you stand behind a counter you are a robot to them with no emotions. In fact if you make small talk, more often than not it catches them off guard and takes their brain a second to process you said something out of the ordinary.

I have my tongue pierced, no one ever notices, and I tell little kids its gum out of respect for their parents. I have a tattoo on my arm that people often stare at. I used to have my ears gaged which got looked at a LOT

I took the gages out because they were a pain to manage

I've never had to deal with someone outright insulting me, but I do notice when it makes people uncomfortable. But You have FAR more self restraint than I.

I've dealt with some insanity in that same degree, but nothing directly insulting to me like that. But I wouldn't take it. I'm sorry you had to deal with that.

I think that a professional look in professional jobs is a good idea. However I don't consider Walgreens a professional atmosphere personally...

I think the person was down right rude...and I would probably have called him out on his language. Your employer hired you based on your qualifications to do the job. If you were not meeting those qualifications, they would let you go. One of the qualifications of your job, is to put up with (explurlative inserted here), and your very good at doing that.

This describes me, most days re: the small talk. I assure you I'm not thinking that the person helping me is a robot or without feelings. I'm just on autopilot and lost in my own head space. I make eye contact, smile, and can handle the standard please/thank you, paper/plastic type exchange. But, anything more complicated and it takes me a few for my brain to make the context switch.

OP: About the rude customer - I have no idea why he felt the need to make negative remarks to you rather than contact management if he was so bothered. I would never give an unasked-for criticism to someone about their appearance unless it interfered with their work, was a safety issue, or violated indecency laws. I do not understand the thought process of anyone who would.

I agree but he did them at 17 to 20 not always the best time for lifelong decisions. He now works from home. At 6ft 4 he can be a little intimidating . I dont get to bothered by what people do to their bodies just what they do to others.
