I think it's a societal thing. Honestly I look at super-models who look like a 12 year old boy and it is not attractive at all. However, when you are constantly bombarded by magazines, movies, billboards, etc. making it seem like you will never be beautiful or acceptable unless you are think makes it seem true. Obviously every girl takes it to different levels, some think they have to reach that level of thinness, while others just want to be a healthy weight.

i think most guys would agree with you on this. i guess it equates to how women are portrayed in the media and it's totally ridiculous and unattainable for many women because most of these women that are thinner than sticks probably already have the genetics for it, coupled with other things...it makes it easy for them to stay thin. others, that's not the case, but they get thin anyway because that's what they think is "attractive." i would kind of compare a woman's desire to be thin with a man's desire to be big and muscular. but you're totally right...being healthy is the most important thing.

YES! I tried to give up sweets at home in 2010. I ended up ordering dessert every time we went out to eat. I've come to learn that my natural, homemade ice cream (~150 calories a serving) is far better to have than a 1000 calorie slice of cheesecake from the cheesecake factory that I just had to have because I was depriving myself.

When I don't make my own ice cream I usually go for Breyers. They're all natural and tend to be relatively low in calories and sugar, compared to other ice cream. My "splurge" ice cream is Ben n Jerry's. At 350 calories and 22+ grams of sugar a serving, I only have it every once in awhile.

I know I've never sat around with a bunch of guys and talked about which girl looks the best because she's so thin. It's not a good look. It doesn't look right at all when you're 5'5" and 90 pounds.

If anything, guys don't like a girl who is extremely thin,
at least from my experience. I know I don't find it attractive at all. Healthy is most attractive if you ask me.
This is the other reason I hate my body. Sigh.
I got to meet a "plus size" (which is really such crap) model a few years back... I'd kill to look like her.

This.

I don't think most people find runway models attractive, and most of the time their not supposed to be, they're selling high fashion.

I do think a lot of Sports Illustrated swimsuit models/Victoria Secret models are attractive, and I'm fairly sure most of the males I know would agree.

lol it's so funny you say that because that's EXACTLY what i had in mind when i wrote my comment. cheesecake factory is the woooooooorst. for everything tho, not just cheesecake. one of their dishes has over 2000 calories in it...it's just insane. that's awesome you make your own stuff. homemade ice cream is way better than any store bought stuff. although breyer's is pretty good. if you get ben and jerry's stay away from the creme brulee flavor. holy heck, that stuff is dangerously good and i'm sure all of the calories and fat go right to places people don't want it to haha. i won't let myself buy it anymore.

That model is lucky! Except for her big boobs, my fat distribution looks like hers, but my face is 10X rounder.

Not that I'm into the fashion world at all or have any sense of it, but I have noticed the models over the years and their look is definitely not my preference. Extremely tall and extremely thin... not my preference.

They are attractive women, but not something to gawk over either. There are much more attractive famous people out there than you see on runways and in the sports illustrated swimsuit magazines... assuming they even count as famous.

My guy friend's think the VS models are usually too thin, but they agree with you on Sports Illustrated.

The closest thing I see to a normal weight on TV/in modeling is probably Zooey Deschanel.

She's rumored to be about 5'6 and 120-130. I find her a lot more attractive than the stick thin women I tend to see in most other shows. On the major hit "Friends" Courtney Cox and Jennifer Aniston were both around 5'5 and 105-115lbs. Courtney got really thin during some seasons. Lisa Kudrow looked "heavy" in comparison and they always put her in baggy clothing to hide it until later on. Even in Community the girls are pretty thin, though they're healthy.

I did an essay on this in college. Generally speaking, women on TV are a size 0-2 or are a size 12+. There's very little in between (though I am aware of a few exceptions). Many women can never naturally be a size 2. I am, but I have friends who are really jealous of me for that. In fact some of the most gorgeous people I know are a size 6-8. It's sadly underrepresented in mainstream media, though.

Movies are a bit different.

Based on the average model size though it seems that the "ideal" size men go for is 2-4. It's still unrealistic since many women are not naturally those sizes, but at least it's not a stick-thin size 0.

I only lose weight under EXTREME stress. Like, life-altering trauma. Then I simply can't eat because my stomach is always upset. However, if I'm just feeling stressed from everyday life and feeling vaguely unhappy, I tend to eat MORE. It's a comfort-seeking thing.

The ironic thing is that I've always wanted to be thin... but the only time I get thin is when something horrible happens, so yay, I'm thin, but I'm a miserable trainwreck.

Honestly, I'd rather be fat and happy than thin and miserable. But why can't I be thin and happy? Life isn't fair.
