The Bio Oil works on the old scars too. My scars were a couple years old by the time I started using it and it still worked. I gotta stress though that it does take time, and you gotta be diligent with using it every day. It's good stuff.

Hmm..I'm interested in the Silicone Sheets, but it doesn't sound like they'll work for my type of scars. Bio Oil it is, I guess. So glad I went out and bought Mederma, heh...

I used the Mederma (not faithfully though) on my facial scar and it didn't seem to do anything. It looks like you are healing really well though!

I had a breast reduction about a year and a half ago...as you may or may not know, it's a pretty big surgery that leaves lots of scarring if they have to do the lolli-pop incisions. ANYWAY, when I got to the healing part and the stitches were out I tried the Maderma. It dries you out and caused worse itching. What helped the most was cocoa butter. I swear by Palmer's. It was soothing and helped the scarring. Keep them moist with that and that's all the advice I can give. Good luck! If you're using neosporin on something that hasn't healed completely, it can cause a thicker scab which can lead to worse scarring...atleast that's what my plastic surgeon told me.

I think you can use silicone sheets on your arms, and knee as well as soon as scabs are gone. They are sticky, but you may want to use elastic bandage to keep them in place on your arm and knee. You may purchase a big sheet and cut it for the best fit.
I used bio oil as well, but you have to be consistent with it and put it on at least once a day, I got lazy with it but bio oil is very good, natural ingredients and when you massage oil into your skin is very beneficial for scar minimizing as well. And you got a very good advice about keeping scars off the sun, at least for a year keep them covered and use the strongest sun block.

Thats what the orthopedic surgeon gave me when i completely tore my Biceps tendon. The scar is pretty big when they cut my arm open to retrieve and unroll the tendon but i'm sure it would have looked alot worse without the silicon sheet.

I broke my wrist last year and had to have surgery. The incision was 3 inches long on the inside of my wrist. The rehab people told me to use the silicone, lay it over the incision and wrap with stretchy bandages. It was amazing. It works by reducing the formation of scar tissue - basically fools your body into thinking the wound is already covered with tissue.
They said I could buy the sheets (very expensive) or buy silicone ear plugs (very cheap). Roll them out flat and use them just like the sheets. I have to turn my wrist and get it in a good light to even see the scar. Good luck and a speedy recovery! |
