OK when I came to little rock 10 years ago this was the deal:
Apartments - lease as short as 6 mos
Houses - 1 year leases
Leases in Arkansas can be broken which costs you one month additional rent.

Realtors can help you. Many also manage properties and can steer you toward safe areas and good properties. One realtor that didn't manage property gave me a lits of those that did. She was very valuable because I could call her to ask about specific locations. I took a week to come look around and find a place.

Campus may have an area where people post approved residences for rent. (That's eons old there!)

But - No I do not think any one would let you move in for a week or two! There's always vacancy before a lease starts and vacancy after. As someone mentioned, often the place needs to be cleaned again and somethings repaired. Moving in and out is hard on a residence, too.

You will need to check to see if campus is OK with a freshman living off campus. Sometimes they prohibit this.

What about talking to the Student Life or whatever it is called center. They occasionally have listings of folks renting apartments or rooms in their homes. Friend of mine did this in University - my opinion, meh, I wanted to come and go as I pleased, I partied, seldom at home and lived the "college life". But they are out there.

I'm not a freshman, I am a transfer student.

Thank you guys so much! There was a lot of good advice in this thread and things I never would have thought of. Thank you.

Update:

Good news! With you guys advice and marketing myself out there, I secured a beautiful place to live! It's a in quiet, peaceful neighborhood a few minutes away from the college.

I have a place to live and feel very good about myself.
