I came across a couple articles today that stated that a dogs name reveals more about the dogs owner than it does the dog. My dog Brutus was named by my DH and he named him after Brutus' grandfather. Not sure what it says about us, but Brutus is well a Brute so his name is a perfect match for him. I couldn't imagine calling him by any other name.
My dog Oso was named by my daughter. I really would have preferred to name him Blitz, speaking of-has anyone ever changed their dogs name after having called him by a certain name for 2 years. I suppose you may be able to teach your dog his new name-explaining this to the vet and everybody else who knows him by a different name would probably be more of a problem. Has anyone ever changed their dogs name after having named him? If it weren't a bit complicated to explain would you contemplate changing your dogs call name? Have you ever heard of someone doing this?

Well, if you rescue a dog..you don't know what its name was..so it gets a new, changed name. They always seem to get it.
I never purposely changed a dog's name, but the names seem to 'evolve' over time. For instance, Gina turned to "Queen B"...go figure..Ha But, I have purposely changed horse's names to something we liked better, after we bought them. Everybody always forgets the old names pretty quickly!! Most people have more on their minds, than wondering why the dog has a new name. LOL |

Dog's names are changed often, especially if the dogs have been abandoned, through rescues and multiple homes. So, I think it is doable. Personally, no, I would not change my dogs' names after I named them.

Nikelodeon79 changed her white GSD's name to Nova when she got him. I think his name was something like Kemo. I'm sure she'll pop in and tell you how it went.

I think the question was, have you owned a dog and after two years of owning the dog, changed the name? Right?
If that's the question, no, I haven't. I know someone who, during the first several months of owning the dog, changed it about four times though.

Well, I got my lab from the dog pound when he was about 8 months old and had no idea what they used to call him. He caught on rather quickly. But what if I changed his name now after having called him Oso for a couple years. I wonder if he'd just ignore me or what. And the explaining it to everyone would be very strange-that is my main concern, people may think of me as very weird.

No I wanted to call Lucky something else but he had had so many changes and while he is a handsome lad he's not overtly quick and he had had alot change so he is still Lucky. Which does fit him.
I think the names of my dogs say i have no imagination. Oh well! |

Funny, you kind of read my mind here, as I've wondered about this!
"Bailey" doesn't fit him! Bailey is a cartoon character, or Baileys Creme or whatever, but is.. does.. not.. fit.. him!!!!!! Granted, he's a doofus, but still. And people always refer to him as "she" because, apparently, unknownst to me! "Bailey" is more of a female name these days! Whoops! I didn't know that! I don't know what name I'd rather have and it seems dumb to change it now, so ? I call him "Bails" more often than "Bailey." Heck he answers to Bails, Mr Bailey, Mr Bails, Bailey, etc.. so I do think dogs get used to something new pretty quick. I told the breeder of my oldest dog her name would be Princess, so they called her that. I picked her up and in a day or less, she became Dolly. It just fit her better. So now she responds to both.

I wanted to name Echo "Orion" so badly, but my parents gave me crap saying it was too long. They then joked about naming him DIDSON (the sonar camera that I work with), which turned into Echo (all of my research is using sonar and acoustics)....
I met a GSD named Achilles that was at the kennel for protection training the other day, I was totally jealous of the name. I think if I ever changed Echo's name, I'd be more confused than he would...I'll still occasionally call my husband "Echo" when I'm scolding him for leaving socks on the floor... |
