My horse needs a new blanket. Her old one was patched, which lasted about two days. It was the first she has had it on this season. She hates her blanket, so I'm sure she is doing this on purpose. (Just like the fly mask.) I think she sticks her head over the fence and begs one of her friends to rip the fly mask off her face.
At any rate, I'm looking for recommendations for a new blanket. There are quite a few saddlery's in my area. Dover and Maryland are the biggest. I seem to remember there was a brand with a decent replacement guarantee. All input welcome. "Eve's" butt is getting wet. Thanks! |

I love my blanket from Schnieders. They have different warmth levels, and a good range of sizes/colors.
This is the one I use and recommend. It has done great for Gatsby who has free choice of being in a stall or a 2 acre pasture by himself. StormShield® CLASSIC EURO Contour Collar Turnouts in Euro Fit at Schneider Saddlery Christina

Many different opinions..but the Rambo is the toughest to destroy, also the most expensive. I have had good luck with the SmartPak Brand also. Does she need a blanket? Is she body- clipped? OR..Old, skinny, a diva..
. I have one that just does not wear a blanket, uses his own hair..I just bring him in when the weather is yucky!

I have a mare who lives in her blanket in the winter. She loves it. I'm not a huge believer in using a turn out blanket because it just makes me nervous. However, because this mare doesn't tolerate the cold weather very well, I bought her a canvas blanket years ago. I turn her out in it.
It has the twist type hooks that if she should get hung up will 'unspring' and break apart. This blanket has lasted me years. Because it's canvas it does get a little stinky, but I just take it out and pressure wash it. I'll have to check tonight to see who makes it. For nighttime blankets I use the those thick, quilted blankets. I think they are Weatherbeetas. But I'm not sure, I'll have to check. The hooks don't last as long as the canvas one, but they serve their purpose. Because it really doesn't get all that cold here, my blankets last me for years. The mare I wrote about (above) is sometimes the only one that is blanketed.

Thanks so much guys. This is all very helpful. Eve only needs a blanket on the coldest days She is on field board, which is $465 a month. A stall is almost $600. Besides, Eve hates being in a stall. Eve is an almost 21 year old TB. She is pretty fuzzy and chunky, so one would think she shouldn't need a blanket. We didn't use a blanket last winter and the farm owner was not happy with how Eve wintered over. Therefore, Eve was fed grain ALL summer along with her hay. That's probably why chunky butt tore out her patched blanket. Around here - it is in the 50s one day and the teens the next. I just want to have the blanket on hand.

The old heavy duty canvas ones really are the most durable. I found that weatherbeta (sp) always ripped in a herd situation, and I had a young TB that played hard with all his buddies at the boarding farms over the years. The one that held up the longest was a dover blanket (I always buy the highed denier available on any brand, don't get less than 1200) and I had one of the less expensive rambo blankets, the name is escaping me at the moment. It's made by rambo but is one of their less expensive (but still $$) lines. It held up pretty well too!

Weatherbeeta. But I have a 300 gram off brand that I'll sell to you very cheap. Never been used. My QH doesn't need it, medium and lights are plenty for him. What size is she?
personally, because of hte up and down temps, I prefer a lightweight turnout and 100 gram fill or fleece to layer under as needed. That way on 30 degree days he is still dry but without a layer Last edited by Jax08; 01-17-2012 at 12:14 PM. |

I have seen come Country Pride blankets that were really sturdy also. If the horses your girl is out with bite alot, you'll have to put patches on the weatherbeeta's. I just used the iron on patches after I wash and then spray with scotch guard.
btw...blankets are on clearance all over the 'net right now! horse.com is a good place to look |

My weatherbeta blankets always got destroyed...I too have had great luck with Rambo's, but they're way overpriced. I like Schneider's blankets a lot, especially the range of warmths, and I agree--their customer service is great!
