Our stable has acquired two donkeys; one a miniature and one normal sized. I've discovered a few things about donkeys:
1: Donkey's don't seem to inspire fancy or unique names. No "Ameretto" or "Glock". These two are Rosie and Lulu. 2: Donkey's have outsized personalities. I'm not sure they realize they are the smallest beasties on the ranch. I bring them treats and while the horses will gobble almost anything up, the donkeys have STANDARDS! Lulu takes it as if she is doing me a great favor by eating something so unworthy. Rosie regards everything offered her with utter disdain, and wait until I've left before eating it. Those Donkey's are a hoot. Jelpy

Mules and Donkey's are notorious for being aggressive towards dogs. Be very careful of your dogs around them

Jelpy, I LOVE donkeys. The donkey at our boarding farm is Dusty. Dusty only likes apples - no carrots. She is older than dirt. Her best friend was a huge Belgian cross. Dusty could practically fit under the big horse. No horse dare mess with that donkey while the Belgian was around. Sadly, the Belgian was retired and adopted out. Dusty was very sad.

The local sheep farms have donkeys guarding the flock from coyotes. They have Llama's in there too, but not sure the Llama's are anything more than a big colored sheep! I've always loved donkeys, even if my thumb was almost bitten off by one when I was 2, my first phrase clearly spoken was "donkey bite!"

Yeah, I've noticed they distinctly dislike doggies and take appropriate precautions. Fortunately for our Donkeys, there is a large separate pasture where the two of the can stay without being hassled by the horses. It goes without saying the have to be bribed to go there in the morning. Poor Leon has no luck; he tries to lead them without success. The Donkey's owner keeps telling him "Just let them think it's their idea and they'll go with you." but he hasn't figured out how to do that yet.

I love donkey's!!! They're hilarious!!! And some are so darn sweet!! When Geramy retires and we have our property, one of my stipulations is getting a donkey. I would love to have a horse because i enjoy them and I do like riding but donkey's are just awesome. I did learn that mini donkey's are usually afraid of dogs, even chihuahua's. But i guess in all things it really depends on the animal itself. Coyotes do know not to mess with a donkey though!! Donkey's kick some serious butt when they want or need to! And they're so cute!!

If that link works properly, you can take a look at Emma. She is a Belgian Mule. Smartest equine I have ever met. She is in a sanctuary and I sponsor her. |

Hey Krystal - Just a word of warning.....Donkeys are VERY loud. My friend was given one for her farm, because the previous owner had neighbors complain about the little guy. You don't need a watch dog, when you have a donkey. LOL! We took this particular donkey to a rescue event. He was too smart for his own good. He was an escape artist who could squeeze out of his enclosure and go in with the horses. He loved all the horses and assumed they felt the same. The draft horses tolerated him. Most of the horses found him annoying. He got tangled in his lead rope. I wanted to lift his hoof, to untangle him. Instead the little stinker layed on the ground and held his foot up in the air.
I hope you get your donkey one day. Just don't let him outsmart you. Donkeys are a never-ending source of entertainment. |
