Default Do you play an instrument?

I am SO excited. My oldest daughter just came in from school. She is in the band in highschool and plays the baritone. Shes been playing since 6th grand and has gone from sounding like a dying cat to having a solo in the upcoming spring concert!!! This is her first, she is nervous and so excited. I am too.

Anyone play any instruments and/or ever been in a band? Anyone ever do solos and any tips I can give her?

That's exciting!!! My biggest tip would be practice but don't over do it. I play the flute, piccolo, saxophone, piano, various percussion instruments, and was actually a music composition major originally. It's all about not over doing it. I find if I practice something and am getting frustrated, and I go to sleep, I wake up and it's pretty well fixed. Not sure why, must be some subconscious thing going on.

Ps, I'm way jealous of people who can play brass. Give me any woodwind instrument and I can play it in a matter of minutes, brass......I can't buzz my lips

ok, i'll make sure she doesn't over do it. Thats one thing she does have a habit with, she will keep at it until she gets it. She is VERY motivated by music and would play until she passed out if I'd let her. Teens.....

i play 3...piano since i was 4, violin at 7, gu zheng since i was 15 :P

advice? Practice till the piece is muscle memory and you can play it without thinking

tht's what i did for all my exam pieces and concerts since i started...oh and deeeeeeeep breaths

edit: but there's a fine balance between muscle memory practicing and over-doing it....i've been known to over-do it and freak out on stage... :P balance.

I played the Piano from ages 6-17 (no formal lessons, we just had one and I liked to play it, I could play heart and soul and the basics but nothing fancy). I played the Ocarina from ages 6-10 because my parents thought it would be cool to get me lessons. I played the flute from ages 9-16 in band. I played the guitar from ages 15-17 in music class. I played the electric violin on my own from ages 15-18 but I stopped and have since been unable to play. And last but not least I have dabbled in fiddle, cello, and piccolo.

Lots of instruments around here.

Excellent advice. I can still play my first piano piece I memorized, perfectly because it's muscle memory. I have no idea what the actually notes are to that song anymore, but the hands know where to go.

Be very careful, he who tells a frustrated musician to relax may be the one to have the frustration unleashed on them

omygah..that has happened more than once. She has a pretty level head on her, 14, doesn't like the teenage drama actually. She's an old soul. But when she is frustrated and over doing it...I wish for the teenage drama.!!
Heavens forbid I tell her to take a break.

I got stage fright and had to stop performing because I was so obsessed with being perfect, and I was a 2nd chair flutist.
