Thats what having labrynthitis does, it makes you feel like the worst drunk of your life. Which was a unneeded reminder to why I don't even drink!
Monday I was fine all day, I was watching tv in the living room, catching this new show called Celebrity Wife Swap. I'm usually in bed by 9:00 and by 9:30 I told my husband I had to go to bed, I felt like I was overtired, a bit dizzy/lightheaded. I got up, went to the bathroom and started feeling worse. Really dazed and dizzy, so I go into my bedroom, stumbling a bit on the way and got undressed. I laid down and felt like I needed to go to the bathroom again so I got back up and went back to the bathroom. I didn't feel good at all. I got a washcloth and laid my head on it on the sink in front of the toilet and when I opened my eyes the room was spinning at mach speed. I yelled to my husband that something was wrong and then I started vomiting - everywhere. He had to help me back to bed because I had no balance at all and thats when it got bad... I couldn't even move my head or arms without feeling like I was falling, I couldn't walk, the room was still spinning, which made me throw up more. I started shaking, everywhere, even my butt muscles were trembling. I finally had my husband call the hospital. This was all in 10 minutes. They told him to bring me right in. It took Jason & my 17 year old daughter, Taryn, awhile to even get me out of the house into the car. Taryn even had to put my pants on. Poor girl, she was such a trooper! Everytime they tried to get me up, I'd fall into a heap because standing was horrid. Then on the ride to the hospital it felt like Jason was doing a continuous doughnut to the right LOL I can laugh about it now, but it sucked. After an EKG & CT Scan the doc said it was labyrinthitis, which is something in your inner ear. No idea what caused it. Yesterday I was taking motion sickness meds just to try to keep the dizziness down, which is all the doc said I could do. That with fluids & rest. I ended up sleeping most of the day. This morning I seem to be better, a bit of "foggy" feeling, but not bad. Anyone else heard of this horrible thing?

My mom had it, it was terrible. She *never* takes off work for sick days but when she had this she was on her back for three days, could barely walk she was so out of sorts. She's allergic to several antibiotics too so that always complicates things.

They didn't even give me antibiotics because the labrynthitis itself I guess only goes away on it's own. Usually it happens with a headcold or a ear infection is what they told me, which I didn't have either. I"m just glad the worst of it was only a few hours. They hooked me up to an IV right away and gave me some potent stuff to take the dizziness away, so that was a nice relief! I kept my eyes closed for a good hour or two, I was afraid to open them LOL

That sounds a lot like vertigo. My brother had it bad enough to go to the hospital. He was dizzy and vomiting, he could not open his eyes without getting sick. My sister had a milder version of it, I hope it is not hereditary, that is something I don't want to get.

Yeah I think it's a fancy word for vertigo. My mom had some sort of ear infection that affected her balanced and caused her to be totally topsy-turvy.

My friend had this a few years ago. It came out of the blue and was EXACTLY like you described! It lasted for 48 hours, then she was fine again. The only thing they could do to treat it was anti-nausea meds. I'm glad you are feeling better!! Not a fun thing to go through!

i have never heard what this is called but, it sounds like what happened to a guy i knew in the military while we were on deployment, basically what happens is, there are all of these little "prongs" or "cilia" inside of your inner ear that are floating out in fluid. what they do is tell your brain its relative location/ orientation in space ( ie: up, down, sideways ) based on the way the fluid is sloshing around in there. every so often, one of them will snap off, and it causes extreme vertigo, nausea, etc. come to think of it it happened to my dad once as well ... that crap does not sound fun!! hope ya feel better.

WOW ... It sounds dreadful! I've known a couple people who've had it, they were super sick but eventually got well! Hope you're feeling better soon!
