I was having a conversation with a neighbor down the road from me. We were talking about training and the various treats I use. I was telling him that my trainer told me about Yummy Chummies which are made from salmon. They stink but most dogs love them.
He told me that he wouldn't feed his dog any kind of fish treats because he takes his dog hunting and fishing with him and that some dogs have had to have surgery due to eating a dead fish that had a hook in it. I can't believe that he thinks by not giving his dog fishy treats, prevents it from eating a dead fish.

I hate Yummy Chummies - because of the smell and maybe it was a bad rolled one I had a couple times, but I had salmon scales everywhere... In my house - <shudder> anything sea food is consumed outside, by animals and humans alike.
Everybody has differing opinions on things, what's the old saying the only thing two trainers agree on is a third is incorrect? When we were researching and visiting breeders this year, we heard a lot of weird things. One was a fairly well respected Shepherd breeder, her dogs were too drivey for our situation, anyways she was heavily for early neutering because in her opinion males became very protective over the female members of the household and it can cause aggression issues... I have a male I neutered early and has lumbo sacral, maybe if I waited his bones would have grown better, his joints would be better - but what do I know? I routinely give bully sticks... Following your neighbor's logic perhaps I should tell dh not to walk around nude. |

I feed my dogs chicken, beef, moose, Caribou and trout - not once have I had to stop my dogs from taking down a cow, LOL.
On the other side, they will also eat anything dead they find (birds, squirrels, etc) even though I have never given them treats made from these critters! |

Well, ramsey is on a fish based kibble for 3 1/2 years. every now and then he gets skinless boneless sardines. I guess i better not let him get in the boat. Lord know's what might happen

hah, we sometimes find chicken bones on walks and I certainly don't want Dax eating those.
So that means I have to stop feeding chicken? Instead of that crazy approach, I have taught him "leave it". |

Plenty of dogs just want to eat anything that's stinky. I've never given my dog fishy treats, but more than once she put her mouth on a dead fish down by the river, in addition to road kill squirrels on walks around the neighborhood! Some people have silly ideas, but this one seems pretty harmless.
