Being that I haven't been on here for a couple weeks now (due to final exams, work, and Ellie Mae's training) I feel like it's time for me to vent a little about how irresponsible and inconsiderate people are!
So, two Saturdays ago, I was parked on the street across from my boyfriend's driveway. The next morning as I'm walking to my car, I see a dent in my car. Concerned, I went inside and asked if anyone backed out of his driveway and hit my car. The only person who pulled out of his driveway was his little brother's friend. I told his little brother to ask his friend and to get back to me. Remind you, this is a HIT AND RUN. Flash forward to a week later, I get a Facebook message (real mature, I know). The message is from the friend of my boyfriend's little brother saying that she did indeed hit my car! She apologized and was very nice about it, which is what I expected her to be. She told me that she would pay for any damage, obviously. So, I tell her that I am going to get estimates on the damage. I got to two car auto body re-builder shops and one of the estimates is $699 and the other is $894. I got her number, called her, and told her. She was confused as all ****, probably because she's 16, so I told her to have her parent/guardian call me. The next night, I get a phone call from this girl's mother. She tells me that she does not have the money to pay for that and gives me this sob story about how she is losing her house and her daughter does not have a job to pay for the damages. Granted, I DO feel bad, but regardless, she has to pay for the damage. I tell her that we could get a legal contract with a payment plan in order to pay it off. Well, long story, semi-shortened up she refuses. She says that she can throw me $20 here or there (Are you serious?) She says that she needs to talk to my parents. Um, excuse me ma'm but I am 20 years old, and this is my car. You do not have to talk to my parents. Anyway, I am just furious because not only did her daughter hit my car, but she drove away after! And she's treating me like I'm a 16 year old. Is this a joke? She says that she wants to bring the car to a place near her house...definitely not going to happen lady! I got 2 estimates, I don't need anymore. She says that her daughter said she was parked close to my car. That's a joke because my car was parked on the opposite side of the street from the driveway. I'm sorry that your daughter does not have a job, maybe she shouldn't be driving..ya think? Tell her lazy butt to go get one and pay for the damage! I've been working since I was 15. If I didn't have a job, I was not allowed to go lollygagging around town picking up my friends. Now, I know accidents do happen. When I was 16, I got into one accident and my parents (being poor) did pay for all of the damage with no argument and I paid them back. Who does this lady think she is trying to get out of paying? Am I the only one who thinks this is absolutely ridiculous!? ![]()

You have in writing that she hit your car. A cop once told me that's enough legally. If she won't pay, tell her you will have your insurance company contact her. Maybe that will light a fire. Print out that facebook message, before she thinkgs about deleting it.

My car was hit this past March and the other driver claimed that I hit him (yeah ... I was going sideways so the front of his vehicle could hit my passenger side door ... not likely). I called my insurance. They came out, estimated the damage, and gave me a check to get it fixed, minus my deductible. Then they went after the other driver's insurance. Took a while to get resolved, but they got their money back and I got a check for my deductible, too.
I would make a police report about the hit/run and then call your insurance. They should pay to get it fixed and then go after the other peoples' insurance to get the money back. |

Wow, how irresponsible of the mother for refusing to pay you back and not forcing her kid to go get a job. People who break the law need to be punished, and a hit and run is just despicable. I think the mother is making excuses for her daughter by saying the daughter can't pay for it because she doesn't have a job. She should go out and GET ONE then.
If she is going to let her inexperienced 16 year old daughter drive a vehicle around, she must be prepared to pay for the damages the daughter will likely cause. Or don't let her drive. It's not your fault the daughter hit you, and people shouldn't use their financial situation to guilt others into paying for problems that they caused. I've give them two choices, either pay for the damage of the vehicle, or pay for the damage of the vehicle in addition to a big fat ticket for the daughter's hit and run if you report it. |

they are apparently also breaking another law - keeping insurance on the vehicle. IL is a mandatory insurance state, as is most of the country. Get a police report. It will have their insurance info on it, if they have any. Call her insurance yourself and make the report.
No need for you to do anything else, other than take your car to get repaired ![]() ETA: IL requires a min of $15,000 for property damage. I usually have no problem working out an arrangement to have minor damage paid for. But since they are jerking you around, I wouldn't give them a chance to screw you over |
