Were getting the keys to the new-to-us house Friday. I'm feeling panicked over the beautiful hardwood floors which I assume are the 45year old original oak being destroyed by the 62 and 82 lb pups. They run and play nonstop in the current house that has carpet EVERYWHERE, even the kitchen and bathroom. Beyond what damages will be done by heir nails, Sidney has a weak stomach and pukes regularly. I fear he will puke on the floor even while in his crate and it will soak into the wood for hours until I get home.
I'm tempted to lay vinyl sheet over the wood in the room they will be crated. has anyone else done something similar? |

Lots of area rugs.
I don't allow my dogs to run around in the house. They can chew & play nice but no running. I have laminate floors so they hold up better than wood. You could try dog boots, but that would be a pain and their feet would get hot.

I would do something like that if I were you. The people that lived in my house let their dogs run around and they scratched the hardwood something horrible, it is pretty ugly in some spots. I would second an area rug and cut the nails very short. I do that with Nova so that her nails don't touch the ground.

Our house is almost entirely wood flooring. I don't allow the dogs to play/run inside....so we haven't had any issues with destruction. I keep their nails trimmed which helps as well. I would be concerned about the liquid (puke) sitting on the floor though, vinyl may help....but it could just roll off it as well?

Our house is 99% original hardwood floors from 1806. I am fastidious about trimming nails. There is NO running in the house. As the floors have no urathane, the water bowl is in the kitchen because it has linoleum. High traveled areas have rugs. The thing that helps the most is no running or rough play in the house.

We've been in our house for coming on 10 years. Most of the floors are still the original wood floors that were put in when the house was built - back in the early 1920s. We did replace some wood in the middle of 2 rooms. My DH did the wood replacement and then we had it professionally finished with a clear coating (don't remember exactly what it was).
We've had puke (dog and cat) and pee/poop (old dogs and puppies). 10 years later the floors still look pretty good! There are a couple 'burned' spots where urine pooled and sat for long periods of time (like a day or so - not just a few hours). That was before we realized our Cocker had forgotten he was housebroken. There are some scratchs but most are from us moving furniture, not the dogs.

Watch out for bones. Harley use to drop his marrow bones on the floor trying to get the marrow to fall out...I have lots of little dents in our familyroom floor.
![]() Other than that they really haven't done anything to hurt the floors. I'd say water and sliding furniture are the two things you have to be the most careful about. Running and playing shouldn't hurt the floors unless they've got really long nails or they're wearing rolling skates.

Mine did the most damage to the wood floors in the first week or so that I had him- until he learned to walk on them without running. Although it made me cringe, it was pretty funny at times to see him run from the carpet to the wood floors and the legs would just go flying and slipping around
