Default Volunteering at high kill shelter

I went to the shelter in my town today, I had this idea that I could go a few hours a week. spend time with the dogs, take pictures and maintain a FB page and weekly newspaper spot with bios and photos of adoptable dogs.

. I saw that they had a black GSD very young puppy, a 6 year old owner surrender, and another adult male GSD stray. I e-mailed the two GSD rescues in my area ( GSD rescue of Northern CA and Greater CA German Shepherd Rescue) and hope they can take those dogs, But there were so many, They looked so sad; hopeful that I was coming for them. Lots of chihuahuas...... I don't know if I can go there every week, but I want to do something.

Hopefully the rescues are able to step in and help. Must give Kudos to you for doing that....it would be hard. I don't think I could, it takes a special person, and I'm sure the dogs loved it.

That's great of you to do that. Hopefully you can help get some of those dogs out of there. You can make a difference even to the ones you don't, show them some love in their last days as well. I read an article about a program in the Manhattan shelter, I think, that has a program where volunteers come in and walk and spend time with the dogs that are on the next mornings euthanasia list. I love that they do that, those dogs get shown some love and attention in their last hours but I don't know if I could do it. It would break my heart.

It's always so sad to see shepherds at the shelter. There is a solid black female at my local shelter and I emailed the rescues for her. Unfortunately her info says that she needs a very experienced home. I hope she makes it.
Here in CA there are way too many chihuahuas in the shelters-how hard can it be to care for them? Poor little guys.

I have to volunteer at a local shelter for a certain amount of hours for my obedience instructor course and I've done two days so far. Its really hard. Especially going in the next week and not seeing any of the same dogs. Its also a pit bull kill shelter and some of them are just so sweet but they seem to know they wont make it out. I avoid that section of the shelter as much as possible.

Good for you! I volunteer with 2 shelters. Well one is more of a rescue organization. The shelter I volunteer for is not a no-kill shelter, but has a 93% adoption. But I did become attached to a few dogs that did not make it out.=( I cried when they day I found out. But I did bond with some that did make it out. Sometimes I don't want to ask.Very rewarding experience. I just love being with the animals.
