Default He's legs broke...put him down.

Basically what my landlord told me about Buddy.

For those who do not know, my mix, Buddy, broke his leg last Friday. Long story short, evil cat on porch, Super Buddy defender of his turf against his arch enemy, steep hill, tripping....ya, I have a thread about it somewhere in General Information.

Anyways. I was talking to my landlord about it and she basically told me that if it was going to cost so much (about 1500 if he needs surgery) then to just put him down because its not worth it.

Anyways.

Buddy goes in tomorrow to have his splint changed out, he's been chewing on it. I had to take him to a different vet to have stuff done, so he goes to his vet tomorrow. She thinks it might be to tight..I think he's just being his neurotic JRT/Rat Terrier self, sees the fluffy stuff sticking out and HAS to pull it out. However, he also tore up the splint at the time <sigh> so..cone of shame it is.

But ya, my rant..im NOT going to put my dog down. She kept talking about her lab they had to put down because it was going to cost soooo much, and how her quality of life would still not be good even afterwards. I could see doing it then, but not for this. After his leg heals he'll be just like he was before hand.

$1,500 is what I paid for my dogs elbow surgery. She fracture a piece of bone and it needed to be removed.

Obviously, your landlord has never enjoyed the companionship of a dog.

Ask her if her family would put her down if she broke her leg or her hip.

Considering she didn't even know exactly what was wrong with her dog, just that it would cost alot of money and her quality of life would never be the same..you're probably right.

I'm just thankful at times like this I know vets that will let me do payment plans and work with me.

Yeah, I think sometimes people tell themselves, "The dog's quality of life would suffer" just to make themselves feel better for not spending the money.

See, this is what I don't get. Its just a broken leg. Granted its not GOOD, but it could always be something so much worse and his life could be on the line, but its not. I know it shouldn't surprise me, but her reaction to it does kinda.

Geez, My mother broke her wrist recently. She is 85. Guess I should have put her down. I mean, she has lived a good long life. She may never be the same. Not sure she is worth the money. Oh wait - it's her money. She's healing pretty well and all I have to do is put her hair up in curlers. Hmm - think I'll keep her.

As for Buddy - it's a broken leg for crying out loud. I'm sure he will be fine. He could live a good quality of life, even if it didn't heal perfectly. Some people are totally ridiculous. I hope the break isn't too bad and doesn't require surgery. I'm glad the vet will work out payments with you. Hopefully it won't be too terribly expensive, but bless you for being more concerned about Buddy than the money.

My parents are always flabbergasted at the money we spend on the fosters and even our own dogs. Their solution would be to euth.
Some people don't "get it", even your own family at times.

Ya, when people hear how much we've spent on our dogs, some people who aren't "dog people" are definitely horrified. Nevermind all the money we spend on the cats too!

I work in the vet industry, and you see such extremes. You have the people who might not really be able to afford to do something, but they go out of their way and into serious debt to at least try. And then you get the people who aren't willing to do anything. I can't tell you how many times I've been told, "You know what we would do with this dog back in my country?" *makes a shooting gun motion*

I think it is a very personal decision, and depends on the resources a person has, and their priorities.

For me, as an Accountant, I can see where some folks could and would draw a line. Having said that, I spent $3,000 for four more months with my Abbey before I lost her to cancer.

I'd pay $750/month to keep one of my girls alive again, anytime, every time.
