Default So vets recommend not-so-great food...do dentists recommend not-so-great toothpaste?

Just watched a comercial on tv a second ago and it was a mouthwash and tooth paste which is number one recommended by dentists. All i could think to say was "BLLLLAH BLAHHH BLAHHHHH" With vets recommending science diet as: *insert used-car sales man voice here*(not to offend) "The #1 Vet Recommended food!!!!!" it now leads me to second think every single item i might purchase that has a recommendation. All i can think about is their kick back for a product that probably isn't very good. Any opinions/ personal stories about other products, i'd love to hear.

**Not picking on car sales guy or dentists, just examples!

Ever since watching Food, Inc., I refuse to buy anything Tyson, also one of the top in meat sales.

Great, now I have to find new toothpaste.

I've stopped using toothpaste and my gum recession has finally stopped(although I still need to get surgery to repair the damage). Toothpaste and mouthwash ruined my dental health. Of course both were recommended by my dentist . What does she care? The more screwed up my mouth gets the more money she gets fixing it.

I've always thought it was a conspiracy. Dentists recommending scouring your teeth with an abrading agent... Seems like a good way to grind the enamel right off your teeth.

Yet still I find myself in front of the mirror everyday brushing and flossing. I'm too chicken to follow up on my suspicions...

I use an Rx paste from my dentist, but he just gives it to me for free. I refuse to use mouth wash of any kind, makes me gag. I believe the paste he gives me has more fluoride since my teeth lack fluoride (which is odd since we have it in our water here). I don't brush super long and use the "soft" brushes (also given to us in bulk by the dentist since my DH brushes "too hard"). I don't doubt that some get kick-backs for pushing products but as for our household, we don't pay for 6 month cleanings (covered by my dental insurance) and our dentist gives us all the tooth brushes, floss, and Rx paste we want for free. Doubt their making any extra on us!

lol great responses!

You really just have to do your own research and draw your own conclusions. It's like you can't trust a thing you hear these days.

Oh gosh, you guys dont trust anyone! You all should go to vet school and dental school! lol!!! My husband is a dentist, we have to buy the toothpaste that we give in the goody bag for "free"! We dont get any kick backs or anything. Darn! WEll, maybe a lunch and learn with Paradise Bakerey Food. Most all toothpaste are exactly the same, whether they say whitening, brightning, daytime, nightime. Fluoride is the main, active ingredient and very important. You all better be brushing and flossing..your teeth and your dogs! lol

I guess I'm lucky that my veterinarian actually recommends AGAINST Science Diet and honestly talks of the higher grade foods that most of you mention you feed your dogs. As far as I know, she doesn't get anything for 'sales' considering what she usually recommends, she doesn't even sell.

As for my doctor, she recommended Aciphex for my acid reflux in the beginning (got a nice stipend for it, too), and of course I used it. Loved it. It worked great. But once the insurance changed and it was ridiculously high, I had to go to Omeprazole. It was ok, but it didn't do near as much as Aciphex did. So when my insurance got better and I could afford Aciphex again, I did. Haven't felt so good in so long!

So I guess it honestly depends on your doctor/vet/dentist/salesperson/teacher/peer/mother, etc. and not necessarily a group as a whole.

My dentist doesn't really hype a certain toothpaste or product, either.

I refuse to believe what most advertisers say when they hype their product with sayings such as #1 vet recommended or #1 doctor recommended, etc. I go with what works for me, what I like, and what works within my budget. As long as it is good for me and will take care of what I need it for, that's all that matters.

As someone mentioned above Food Inc. did me in on the Tyson and Perdue brands of Chicken. I try to buy things locally and in bulk to freeze them when I can.

Regarding the toothpaste - wouldn't surprise me. I personally like Toms or Rembrandt's toothpaste.

Same. Food Inc changed my entire perspective on everything I put in both my mouth and my pets mouths. I love using Tom's. Funny thing, I'd had gingivitis since I was about twelve. I was always scolded to just brush my teeth more and rinsed with fluoride. I bought the Tom's Toothpaste that had no fluoride in it. Within a year my gingivitis was gone. Dentist could not explain that to me.
