Cut up four onions and sauteed them in an eight quart pot in a half stick of butter. Then I cut up a three pound chuck roast and dropped each piece in a flour/salt/pepper mixture.
When the onions were transparent, I dropped the flour-dredged meat pieces in there and ended up adding another stick of butter. After the meat was nice and browned, I added eight cups of spring water. I let this boil lightly for almost an hour. Then I added five stalks of celery and waited another half our before adding five pounds of peeled, cut up potatoes. I added another 16 ounces of spring water and some salt. I then cut up two pounds of carrots and added them and more salt. After another fifteen minutes I added the turnips. I let that simmer for about fifteen minutes more and then turned the heat off. It turned out really good.

That does sound good! I love stew but I usually make mine with venison.
I also add brown gravy to mine.

I love making stew, one of my favorite meals.
Your recipe sounds yummy, minus the turnips that's basically how I make mine except I add a brown gravey mixture that is a old family secret. Yummy. Some nice crusty bread with butter, a warm blanket by the fire and a good movie with my stew and I have a great night!

steak for stews??? mmmm.
But I LOVE steak, it would never make it into a stew. Since I dredge the meat with flour, I usually do not need to thicken the gravy at all. But if I do, I just put some flour in cold water and stir it up good and that will thicken it ok. We're having left over beef stew tonight!!!

I have it over my parents' house, my sister her kid, and my brother in law is here. Sometimes it feels like the entire neighborhood.

[QUOTE] I find that isn't enough if I do it in the slow cooker, but it does stove top. I tried a new recipe last week where I used red wine in the stew. It turned out really good. I am going to try it again with a better wine because I had to use some left over wine because I got hit at the liquor store and didn't have my ID. LOL. I am well over the legal age. The guy behind me graduated with me and tried to vouch for me, but no go. He offered to buy it but I had no cash. Worst part is, I am in there for work all the time, plus DH's mother worked in the store for years and we were always in there. |
