I have a 10 year old tabby cat (male). He is abit shy, has periodical problems with my other cats, but nothing out of the ordinary/or recent changes in home enviroment.
I got a call from my wife, I had already left work, so I couldn't run the issue by the doctor (I work at a vets office). Our cat is growling at everything, not swatting/hissing, just growling. His eyes are clear, hearing is good. Along with the growling, he is sniffing deeply, taking in scents, or trying to (can't tell if his scent is off). Mitts is eating fine, using the litter box, coat is fine, weight is fine, just the growling and sniffing. I usually think of pain or neurological issues with something like this. My wife washed the sheets/blankets on the bed, since he hangs out there most of the time. He doesn't appear to be running a temperature, its just the sudden growling, deep sniffing. My wife failed to tell me that this started last night while we were asleep, she never thought anything of it, because once in awhile other cats come around (in the bedroom), he sleeps close to my wife. Any thoughts what so ever? Since its been basically 24 hours, I was thinking of taking him to the Emergency clinic. Worst case scenario I was thinking something in the brain and Hyperthyrodism Thanks

That certainly sounds odd, but I'm not sure its medical. Any chance that an intact male moved in around your house and Mitts is smelling him?

Is he the 'King" of your males? The others may not react. Please let us know what the vet finds. I'll hope for the best.

Before I got my big white cat on thyroid meds, he was SUPER sensitive to the other cats and, because of his growling, the other cats would attack him. Definetely have your kitty checked for thyroid problem.

Ok, so more info. Prior to my wife leaving, I heard him growling, which he is doing. He is also making another noise, its more of a grown, about every 12-15 seconds, which I never heard (and this is noise what my wife was talking about, I thought it was only a growl). The vet doesn't think its respitory, the tech thinks its respitory. The doc says lungs sound clear and no raspy sound (plus what xray showed). The tech thinks its resp because its consistent (which I agree with). He is growling at times, but when he sits here, the grown comes out in the time frame I mentioned. Further, I found out my wife cleaned the bathroom shower with bleach, closed the door (shower door), but left the bathroom door open, I am wondering if he went in there for any extended period of time. If so, IMO, this could cause a problem. I will set up an appointment to have his thyroid tested and recheck for this grown (maybe its a sound of not being comfortable). The xray was clear, there was long and extra stool in there (colon), so an emina was given, which passed stool. I don't think it was a constipation issue because of the grown, but if the grown is a sound of discomfort, maybe it is. I am beginning to wonder if the bathroom door being open, caused something like this (if its respitory, then signs would lead to this). Mitts was given a high fiber food as well. I work tomorrow, so I can schedule his appointment for friday.
Thanks for all the input, Happy Thanksgiving.
