My husband used to leave one shiny penny for bad service.
I'm more the type to bitch to the manager and get something for fee.

As an ex-waitress I can say that is BS and I hope they get off and it sets a precedent! The tip is for good service! Not mandatory!

This whole tipping thing has gotten ridiculous, imo. In some foreign countries, not only is tipping not expected, it's refused when you offer it. Sometimes it's actually insulting to the server when you try to tip them. You're supposed to do your job, and do it well, regardless of whether or not you get gratuity, that's what you get PAID for.
I can understand tipping a waitress or delivery person - they make like $2/hr and their wages factor in tips regardless of whether or not they get it. Even then, it should still depend on the quality of service, and not be mandatory. For other professions that make well-above minimum wage it gets a little hard to swallow. |

I can't believe what this world is coming to! The waiter/waitress should have done a better job and while they can calculate the going rate for tips, the lack of doing so should not be a jailable offence! I worked in the hospitality industry for 18 years and could never have taken it that far!

It depends. If the group called ahead and reserved, was advised this is protocol, then this is a contract (a verbal contract) and they're obligated. If it's written in large print in the menu, I'd still say it's a contract and they're still obligated.
If it's written in tiny print on the back of the menu, or the server mentioned it after they ordered, or they weren't advised at all, then they were well within their rights. A red flag to me would have been that a group of SIX is considered a large group. Six is often just a family. Had I seen that on the menu (and been that size group), I would have been ... I don't have a problem with mandatory tips when a group gets large because then people often don't know each other well enough to say "Hey Bob, pay your share!" But with a group of six people (often three couples) that shouldn't be an issue. Two thoughts come to mind: either this place gets a lot of tourists who can be known not to tip well (because they're never coming back to that restaurant, so why bother?), or their service is usually pretty lousy. If it's the latter, then the manager knows it and is forcing his patrons to pay for service he knows they're not going to get. As Tammy says, I don't know enough to form an opinion. |

It never ceases to amaze me what makes the news these days... LOL!
My ex from long ago (not the latest) used to put ten one dollar bills on the table from the start and every time the poor waitress made a mistake, he obviously took one away each time. I HATED that!!! ![]() And I agree gratuity is JUST THAT. It's even described as gratuity in the menu/bill! Gratuity does not equal required! That's a great way to cause really poor waitressing everywhere. -Jackie |
