Depending on where you live, the backyard wouldnt be any different from the front yard and could be just as visible.

People need to find better things to get upset over.

I used to hang laundry out when I owned my home and then got lazy and hung it on the lines that my grandmother had put up in the basement. Living in an apartment, it's just easier to use the dryer. We don't have a clothes line, although I'm sure I could request one and they'd put it up.

There recently was a case where someone called police on a man, and is now suing him for mental distress (or some such nonsense) because she and her daughter saw him through the window, making coffee in the kitchen in HIS house, in the nude.

I do think that underwear should be hung up to dry indoors (my grandmother used to hang her underwear and stockings in the kitchen, near the stove), but I don't see anything wrong with hanging other laundry outdoors, especially things such as bed linens or blankets that take a long time to dry.

I can't tell from the photo in the story whether this is her front yard, or whether maybe her house is on a corner lot and it's the side / back yard behind the house that just happens to be alongside the road?

But at any rate, if it is HER yard and there are no homeowner's associations to worry about, she should have the right to hang her laundry in the front OR the back yard, whatever she prefers. I don't like people telling others what they can and can not do on their own property - what business is that of theirs, as long as it's not illegal?!

Then again, laundry is a pretty common sight for me around here. We're in the country and have a lot of Amish neighbors.
I heard about that,it is rediculous. What's next can't sleep without clothes because some peeping Tom might get offended because you weren't what he was looking for??

Back yard? Go for it, dry away.
I agree 100% - can't imagine anyone in my neighborhood hanging laundry in the front yard... back yard, no problem!

I can see both parties' point of view. Looking at clothes from the front part of the house is tacky depending on what type of neighborhood you live in. I rank it up right up there with people who park their cars on their front lawn when they have a perfectly good driveway to use.

I live in a neighborhood where privacy fencing is an option and our neighborhood covenants clearly state that outdoor clothes lines are not allowed. I installed a privacy fence for the backyard and feel that whatever I put behind it is my business. I own a good sized collapsing umbrella type clothesline and use it all the time. If people want to hang dry their clothes, great, hang it up where other people don't have to look at it. During the winter I hang dry my clothes in the laundry room or the garage. Even in other parts of the house if need be.

Of COURSE it's ugly and tacky.... but do you really want someone to be able to tell you what you can and can't do in your own yard?

I mean if you CHOOSE to live in a subdivision with the rules that comes with that fine, but it is a very slippery slope to have the city/county come in and tell you what you can and can't do on your own property.

We had that here awhile back. They outlawed furniture on front porches. Now, I wouldn't ever think of putting a couch or recliner on my front porch but by golly If I decided that I WANT to, I don't see how the county should have any say so in it!!!

They did that in Pittsburgh too on the SOLE basis that rowdy fans after last years Super Bowl burned a porch couch in the street. THAT sort of thing makes me ANGRY! I agree, I would not put a couch on my front porch either but what the heck gives the government the right to say what you can or cannot do on your own property?!
