Decided to start another thread about this.
******************** My neighbor had lost both her mother and sister in their 40's to BC and she herself found out last year that she did have the mutation. She is 41. She got mammograms and MRI's every year for the past few years. She had decided to have both breasts removed but when preparing for surgery they gave her bad news. Even though she had a Mammogram and MRI earlier this year which came up clear, she now had advanced BC. She just underwent a double mastectomy and is in her 3rd or 4th week of doing chemo. They staged her at III B I think my sister said. She is beating herself up mentally for not getting it done several years ago. She has 2 young children and feels that she will not get to see them grow up. It is very sad. *************************** So: You undergo genetic testing and find out you have the BRCA gene. Would you undergo prophylactic surgery?

When I was diagnosed I was tested for the gene. If I had it I would have removed both breasts. Didn't have it.

Forgot to add - another reason I had myself tested was for my sisters and their daughters. It's an important piece of info in deciding how often to check yourself.

I wrote on the other thread, but two of my SILs (37 y/o) are stage IV. They have the mutation, as do two of their younger sisters. One sister had a preventive mastectomy last week, the other has hers next month. Both will have their ovaries removed, as well.

I have BC running down both sides of my family. Both of my grandmothers had it.
Even if I underwent the testing and found out I had the gene, I don't think I could through with a mastectomy.
