1) Developers want to buy your home...
I'd definitely sell. Animal testing is a necessary evil and it's not like me refusing to sell to them would stop them from proceeding with their studies. The people need their jobs and have a family to feed too.

2) Your home is burglarized...
Put him away

b)What if instead of a drug addict...
He clearly cannot take care of his child if he has to resort to theft. Theft will only lead to more theft and it's his responsibility as a parent to recognize when he can no longer care for his child.

3) Which would you prefer...
I'd rather be financially content as I can never be emotionally content if I'm worried about money.

2) Honestly I wouldn't care as long as I have my stuff back! I don't know that I'd ever care to know who the person was or why they supposedly did it.

3) I'm pretty close to both, actually. Financially content simply means I can afford to take care of myself and my animals, I can make ends meet and have a bit on the side for my hobbies. I don't see why we can't be both, unless one has outrageous financial needs in order to feel emotionally content....these people don't ever seem to be happy anyway.
What she said, exactly!

I wouldn't. Yeah, someone else would come along that would. But I live with me. What I do is more important to being able to live with myself than what other people do.

As for the second scenarios---that is a difficult choice.

All I can say is, anybody who'd want to steal my stuff would REALLY have to be one desperate dude!!!!

Although there is a lot to be said for being financially well off---I think I have to agree that if push comes to shove, it doesn't do you much good if you are not at peace with yourself. Just watch the celebrity gossip news a few minutes if you think money can buy happiness.

Quote:1) Developers want to buy your home and demolish it in order to build a research centre in which animal experiments will be conducted. They offer you double the market value, would you sell? or since this is an animal board- How about Triple? Or Quadruple? That's a heck of a lot of money..... to ease your guilt.
I have a counter-question on this one - are the developers looking to purchase just my home to build their research center, or are they looking to purchase my whole block / street / whatever for their center?

Chances are, if they are in the process of buying the whole area, including all my neighbors' home, I will end up having to sell my property whether I want to or not. So, personally, I would take their offer of double (or tripe, or quadruple) the worth of my home and sell it to them. Rather than wait until I am forced out and end up with less than what my home is worth, plus having to move in a short period of time.

If this is a big corporation, my selling or not selling my home for their research center won't make a difference in whether they will use animals to experiment on or not. If they're big enough, they'll force me out and build it, regardless of whether I refuse. If they're a smaller corporation, they may just go elsewhere. At any rate, my selling my home (or not) won't keep them from experimenting on animals. Hence, I see no reason to need to "ease my conscience" about selling my home.

If anything, I can use some of the extra money they're paying me to campaign against animal experimentation - but I have to admit that I am NOT against all animal experiments, especially if they are experiments that will save countless human lives.

Quote:2) Your home is burglarized but fortunately the low-life drug addict is caught and your possessions returned to you. What would you deem a suitable punishment for this burglar?

What if instead of a drug addict he was a family man who had recently lost his job couldn't get any government assistance and had a hungry family, including a severely handicapped child at home he was trying to feed? Should his punishment be less severe?
I don't think the law should make a difference regardless of who the person is committing a crime or what their reasoning is for committing a crime. I don't feel that someone in the situation you describe should receive a lesser punishment than, say, someone who is famous because of who they are or what their reasons are. A crime is still a crime.

Quote:3) Which would you prefer, to be 100% emotionally content or 100% financially content for the rest of your life?
Can you be 100% emotionally content if you can't feed your family? I don't know.

I don't think you can arrive at 100% contentedness, either emotional or financially. There is always going to be one of the two that will not be completely fulfilled.
