Hi, I am asking this question for my friend who has been breeding Goldens for many years. She is a little concerned with this bitch. This is Crickets first litter so this might be "normal" for her. She is due approx 2/8 (Monday). She stopped eating the other day which didn't really surprise her because she is quite "round". They saw 6 puppies on the ultrasound but thought there were a few more. When one of her previous bitches was pregnant with a large litter (years ago) she also wasn't interested in eating. She was able to get 4 small meals of meat and cottage cheese into Cricket in the last few days. What she is finding odd is that Cricket needs help getting up when she's been lying down. Once up she's fine but needs help in getting up. Her temp the last few days is dropping nicely as it should. She's down to 99.8 this morning. Her attitude seems fine. Her eyes are bright and she wags her tail as soon as she sees someone. She felt most vets wouldn't understand her concern but maybe could get some insight from fellow breeders.

Any breeders out there??? Does this sound like a reason to be concerned or is she worrying for nothing?

The needing help getting up is odd. I have never seen that. Not even in the last stages of pregnancy for our recent 12 pup litter. Raven was as big as a house, but had no trouble getting up or waddling around.
I can't think of anything necessarily pregnancy related to cause this, but it is possible there is an underlying condition, like spinal problems or something along those lines, that is just becoming noticeable now due to the extra weight she is carrying around.

She could be experiencing some mild form of eclampsia or as Chris pointed out, some type of underlying spinal problem. I would get the dog into a vet since eclampsia is life threatening.

Why not take her to the vet and let him check her out? Guessing with a beloved pg bitch could be a risky thing. JMO julies'omom

Cricket went to the regular vet on Friday for blood work and x-rays which all looked like she was progresssing as she should. By Saturday all signs showed that she would be having the pups that day. By early evening (no pups yet) the fertility vet wanted to see her and had his staff on stand-by (during snow storm). Fetal monitors showed some minor signs of distress and they opted to do a c-section. Cricket is now the proud momma of 13 golden babies, 7 boys and 6 girls. Big litter for a first time momma, but she is doing very well with them and Momma and babies are all healthy.
