Default Working litter

I wanted to share something that has worked for me for years and others I have told. My newly imported bitch whelped 6 healthy pups yesterday. Started at 0900 and by noon, done. Once I saw her temp drop, I started feeding her vanilla ice cream. Yep, you heard me. First pup, fed ice cream, shortly thereafter, pup. Ice cream fed and within minutes, pup. This went on until she was done. These were big fat pups too. LOL A vet shared this tidbit with me years ago. He said that I could boost that bitch's glucose faster with vanilla ice cream than he could with an IV. When I feed the ice cream, her sugar level shoots up,contractions kick in and pup comes out. And, the bitch natually appreciates that little snack. Just wanted to share. :-)

My old vet said the same thing!
We always kept vanilla ice-cream in the freezer at the vet clinic.

Renee Congrats on the little ones.

When I was whelper helper and we were at the Repoduction Specialist Vet she told us about the Ice Cream. This is what she said, the sugar content keeps the energy level up, the calcium keeps the contractions going and helps the bitch drop milk and the liquid content keeps the bitch hydrated. So who would have thought that Ice Cream was so healthy. Just a note, it needs to be real ice cream, not any diet stuff.

Val

We also keep vanilla ice cream on hand for whelping. Not just for the calories, but also the calcium. One of the leading causes of uterine inertia is low calcium levels. I've known vets and breeders to recommend keeping calcium injections on hand to give the bitch if necessary, and always try that first before giving oxy, but the ice cream does the trick just as well.

Bitches often won't eat or drink during whelping, and since it can last several hours that makes it hard to keep them hydrated and keep their energy up. But I've never had one turn down an ice cream snack. Sharing helps the humans keep their energy up too.

Vanilla icecream is wonderful!
If you don't have any on hand......my vet also suggested Milk/watered down alittle.....otherwise, sometimes a looser stool.
