Default Mom's who WON'T clean pups?

Anyone had a bitch that wouldn't clean her pups at first? Did she learn to do it later?

I've noticed that Kaynya doesn't like to clean the pups as much as she should. And since they are getting TONS of milk they tend to have a bit of loose poops.

Ah, the joys of breeding. Wiping puppy butts several times a day.

I have not had a litter ever but from what I have read up on it does happen and more than we would like to think about lol! Some on their first litter will pick it up after a few days and others won't until they have had a second litter. My breeder of my Dogue De Bordeaux had a 2nd time mother that was great...my pups mom. But his other female was a first time litter and did not keep the pups as clean until they were over a week old and then she caught on.

The cleaning stimulates the disgestion, as well as puppy pooping and peeing...

It also stimulates and keeps the puppies going and encourages them to eat.

Never had this problem with my own female or the foster moms that we have had in the rescue - I haven't ever run across this even - usually it is the other way around, moms obsessively cleaning. Hope her instincts kick in soon.

Lauri, the only time we had this problem was when our cira had her pups by c-section. After a few days she then started and we had no problems since.

Update - since the pups stools have improved Kaynya has been very good about keeping them clean.

Sue - I was. Warm, wet wash cloth gently rubbed on their bottoms.

I'm just glad mom is back at it! It will be soon enough when I have to be cleaning up after them!
