I'm wanting to keep a female puppy back from my breeding. I was wondering about taking an x-ray around the age of 8 weeks. I know that the growth plates are not closed and that there's no way to tell if they will OFA when they are 2. An x-ray would show generally if the sockets are shallow or deep at that age right? I ask because a receptionist that I work with at the vet's office "breeds" Goldens (don't get me started
) and the x-rays of her dogs all have very shallow sockets and just bad hips in general. Has anybody ever done x-rays at that age to see?

Never as things can change so much. Even ofa doesn't recognize prelims until 4 months. I'd recommend holding onto until at least then before doing the xray. I personally wait until about 10-12 months.

Hey maybe the receptionist should punch herself in the face and stop breeding goldens with bad hips. Baron had his xrays at 6 months. Sorry thats all I can add

I have heard Penn hips can be done earlier if that is an option. Not sure how reliable it is but it is an option.

I guess more what I'm asking is theoretically, if I had 2 females that seemed to be equal puppies and couldn't decide which to keep back, and I could only keep 1, would I be able to see if one had better hips than the other for possible future breeding? I'm not looking to certify anything at that age.

And yes, the Golden "breeder" should punch herself in the face (if I don't do it first, lol) She had 36 puppies this spring, and the sire had bred to 9 females before the age of 2... I'll just stop there before I say anything too nasty.
