I am new to the forums. Glad to be here. I am Kelly and own to GSD. We live on a farm with four dogs and several barn cats, two off-the-track race horses and many chickens.
My female is almost 6 years old. We have a 11-month old male as well. Abbey, my female went into heat the end of July. We did not think she would get pregnant because the male is so young, but I am starting to think she may be. We do want to breed her, although we have never bred dogs before. Have seen many litters of kittens barn though. She has been panting heavily. Last night she was shivering. She has been slightly more aggressive and not wanting to go outside either. Her temp last night was 100.9 and this morning it was 99.4. We took it about an hour later and it was 101 again. She is a long coat so it's hard to tell if she has gotten bigger. She is def. 'off' as we know her to be. Any advice? Kelly

I would take her to the vet for an x-ray. That will tell you if she is pregnant, and if so give a rough count of how many pups to expect.

I agree with Chris on this one. A trip to the vet for an X-ray is in order. Older females with a later in life first litter can develope some issues, and knowing what you are or aren't dealing with will be money very well spent.

I found this site http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/breedingpregnancyguide.htm Maybe you can get something from it? I would say the best thing to do is call a vet. I just wanted to bring up a point, from what I understand you have to x-ray after a certain point in the pregnancy for the pups to be able to show up on the x-ray. From what I gather you wouldn't really know the exact date she would have been bred, so if you had the x-ray done too early it might not show anything....

Update, so we came home today and there was diarrhea EVERYWHERE - in her whelping box (just in case she IS pregnant) and on the floor of the room etc...
I took her temp and it's now 98.0. I cannot be certain she is pregnant but can't help but wonder if we may not have some puppies in this house in the next 24 hours
