Default Need info from breeders-Pregnant husky found.

Hi Everyone,

About an hour ago a pair of huskies were wandering around our neighborhood. They finally made it to my house-scared the beejeebees out of me. They just appeared behind me. There is a neighbor trying to locate the owner-someone call the AC to look for huskies. I posted on CL.

It is a pair and the female is VERY pregnant. They are freindly, but the male is being very protective. The female is panting heavily.

SO -how do I tell if she is close to birth. She is very milk heavy. See attached picture.

There are inside of my fenced area so they are safe for now. They keep looking for a way out-so hopefully they do not dig.

What are they prelabor signs-because obviously if she starts to have them I will know.

I will be checking the forum often. I am watching the female through a window. Also need to change out water buckets.

If you go in the breeding section of this forum you may find information I believe. Good luck. She sounds close.

If she is that heavy with milk and panting heavily she could very well be in labor now.

Thanks-didn't even think of that. They have settled down, but she is still panting.

I have absolutely no idea, but I'm kind of wondering if you want to be close to her if once she starts having babies....and I'd be very careful around the male.

What I was trying to say, is to use caution when around them right now.

And don't be surprised if they escape. Huskies are known for being "runners".

Is there any way you can seperate the male from her?

Do you have a plastic kids swim pool so she can whelp in it?

Unless you're really up to the task of whelping a litter of pups with a couple dogs you don't know, best course of action would probably be to call local vets and see if one of them will take her and deal with a potentially impending whelp.

One thing you can do to try to pinpoint whelping time is to take her temperature. Close to whelping the temp will drop from it's normal 101-102F down to 99F or below. Once this happens, whelping will typically begin in the next 12-24hrs. This may give you an idea of how close to whelping she is.

If you can set up some sort of nest for her, even if just a baby wading pool and blanket or shredded newspapers, you can watch for nesting behavior too. Restlessness, panting, constantly digging around in the bedding are all pre labor signs.

The trying to dig may also not be trying to escape, but may be trying to make a den/nest. Females LOVE to get into tiny, enclosed, dark places to whelp if they can. So under the deck, under a tree, a hole in the ground and similar types of locations will be very attractive for her, particularly if she's close to whelping.
