Default Charging more for a guarantee?

Why would a breeder charge more for a puppy if it is sold with a guarantee?

Good question...I wouldn't buy a puppy that had that stipulation.

Because the guarantee brings with it the potential for monetary loss on the breeder's part, so they need to cover that possibility by charging more.

In Europe, breeders don't offer guarantees. Buyers don't expect them, and the culture is more such that people realize there is no such thing as a "guarantee" when buying a living creature. People are expected to do their research, make their choice and hope for the best. If something goes wrong, they don't look for someone to blame or expect any sort of compensation for it. So European breeders typically are able to sell their pups for less than US breeders who are generally stuck having to offer a guarantee because over here it is expected, and a breeder who doesn't offer one is considered suspect. Totally different cultural way of approaching the subject of buying a pup.

Some US breeders offer the option.. more expensive pup with guarantee, less expensive pup without.

puppy guarantees never made any sense to me. do your research, make your choice, hope for the best. exactly.

While this isn't a very common opinion amongst US buyers (and whether it should be or not is a whole different topic), there are quite a few people who do feel that way. They would rather pay less and skip the guarantee. Especially if the guarantee is written such that the dog would have to be returned to the breeder... many people would never consider doing that even if a problem did arise, so why not pay less upfront rather than pay more for something they'd never use in the first place?

I have a funky guarantee and it is probably stupid on my part. I put down in the contract that I will take the dog back for a full refund at any time within two weeks. After two weeks I will take the dog back if it needs to be rehomed.

I then have blank lines for add ons.

I have had one person very worried about the ears going up so I wrote that in to both copies, and we both signed it.

Another person wants hips guaranteed, so I will write that in. I do not WANT the puppy back if it already has a good home, but I require that a pup that I have offered to replace with another puppy be spayed/neutered and proof of that given prior to providing a replacement.
