We use little adjustable nylon collars. The smallest ones get small enough to fit newborns, then they're easy to adjust in size as the pups grow. Once the pups reach 4 weeks old or so and have maxed out the small collar we switch to a larger adjustable nylon collar of the same color.

We've used rick-rack in the past, but having now used the collars for the last several litters I can say I like them a whole lot better.

I use the ID bands. They are inexpensive and have worked really well for my 4 litters. Then they get real collars as they out grow those.

We have always used rick rack. A Keeshound breeder I know uses magic marker to number the puppies.

I buy the nylon adjustable collars but do not put them on until the pups are a week old. For the first week I am weighing twice a day and use rick rack. I check it every time I weigh them and replace it often.
