Default Another tattoo question...

I'm thinking about tattooing my pups as well as microchipping. Do breeders usually just use the clamp type thing, I see I can order them online about $40. Also, they are usually in the right ear, correct?

Lastly, I would like to get my other two dogs tattooed, but they are older. 6 months and almost 3 years. Anybody in Illinois or southern Wisconsin that can do a pen tattoo for me? Thanks!

Breeders don't usually tattoo their own pups.

Most SchH clubs I've been to has one experienced tattoo person that has been doing this for years. This is done when a pup is around the age of 8 to 10 weeks before going to their new homes. I wouldn't recommend doing this myself (I know I wouldn't) As for older pups and dogs. I have taken a few dogs to my vet to have ear tattoos done but this vet is also experienced with tattoos. My biggest worry would be broken ears if not done right.

Oh, I guess I thought that the breeders usually did this, maybe they were taking them somewhere and I just assumed. I don't know of any vets in the area that do tattooing. Since my dogs are older, I would want the thigh tattoos for them.

Contact SCH USA for a list of tattooers for the ear tattoos. Also, check with breeders in the area as to who is the best one.

We have a great tattooer, Ronnie Hill, in our area. Sanitizes prior to and after, excellent with the puppies and clear tattooers with no issues. I have helped (holding) him with a few litters.

We know of 1 breeder that tattooers their own puppies, but will not tattoo anyone else's.

We do our own for those who want it. I typically won't do it for anyone else unless I've known them forever. So I've only done one dog that wasn't mine. Before I did my own, I had a rottie breeder do some for me.

Most breeders I know who tattoo their pups do the tattoos themselves unless they're doing USA registration on the litter which requires a USA tattooer.

We do our own, and have tattooed pups for a couple other breeders and a few individual people whose pup wasn't done by the breeder and they wanted it tattooed for whatever reason.

Contact infor is on the USA web-site. I will track down his mobile for you.

The frustrating thing is when I was working on updating info on the web-site with Charlie last year, one of the areas was the tattooers.

We wanted to ensure we had the correct information, as well that the tattooer had /had access to a kit. Some people were listed and did not have either.

The response rate was terrible.

Some do, some don't. I wanted Nikon tattooed b/c it's so much easier for sport and show than the microchip (he is chipped as well), and when I called around here I couldn't find any vets that did it with the clamp, even my own vets who have a "farm" practice as well had never heard of it. I guess if you plan on doing it from now on then it wouldn't hurt to get the clamp and do them yourself. Other breeders and the SV tattooers seem very willing to do it but then you have to find someone every time.
