BYB, Puppy Mill, Responsible Breeder

After reading over posts in this area, got me to thinking. What do you REALLY consider a BYB, Puppy Mill?

I know what I think regarding these. Just curious what others think. ( and please I don't want this a working vs show, thread or to turn nasty) Titles in this thread can mean working,show, agiltiy, obedience.

Puppy Mill is pretty easy one, till reading the other thread that is why I included it.

Some examples.....
health tests done, health tests all passed goot to excellent, , but no titles... BYB? Why

titles, but no health tests.... BYB? Why

health tests all passed good to excellent, only CGC. BYB? Why?

We all know the true BYB of no papers, no health tests, I have a dog you have a dog, lets make money.


Puppy Mill.......

Health tests, all passed good to excellent, titles, breeds every heat for 2-3 years.

Health tests, all passed good to excellent, no titles breeds every heat 2-3 years.

No health tests, titles, breed every heat 2-3 years.

Then of course there are the puppy mills familar with, dogs kept in cages, no life but to produce litter after litter.

Standing by your dogs and taking them back if anything should go wrong... at any time in their life... where the owner can longer keep them. If rescues can do this...and they are just a bunch of volunteers who love animals...breeders should do no less. If a breeders dogs end up in shelters or rescues...they are not reputable in my book...and are just contributing to the horrific epidemic of homeless animals in our society.

A breeder may work hard to weed out "bad" puppy buyers..... but it is does not make them disreputable if the owner turns the dog into a shelter.
Not doing something about it if/when they find out, does.

To clarify...this means if the dogs end up in rescues/shelters because the breeder would not take back. Obviously if they are turned in without the breeder's knowledge...no one can fault the breeder. BUT if they are notified.....and do nothing...THAT is not reputable.

A puppy mill is a BUSINESS that is in it for the MONEY. Their #1 concern is to produce as much PRODUCT as possible and will sell their PRODUCT to anyone that has the money.

A BYB is someone who breeds for fun or money, with no regards to bettering the breed, and will sell to anyone that has the money.

A responsible breeder is someone that breeds for the betterment of the breed, is concerned about improving every litter they produce and only sells puppies to the RIGHT people.

That's my definitions.

Sorry kind of left out the responsible breeder in my first post, yes I agree, a responsible breeder should take back their puppies/dogs at any age, for any reason. But I guess a puppymill or BYB wouldn't care about taking back the puppy/dog.

Ok so Lauri, would you consider a person who does health tests, (and this doesn't have to just be about GSD's but any breed) does obedience classes but no titles a BYB? A person who does screen the new owners, turns down the ones that don't feel right or measure up to what you as a breeder think should own one of your dogs, and would take back a puppy/dog for whatever reason. BYB?

I think a lot of BYBs love their dogs very much,and want the pups to go to good homes. To me, they often just lack knowledge and education.
