As I've posted recently, we have moved in temporarily to my MIL's home. The only pet we could bring is Tori, our GSD/Rottie/lab mix. Tori is nearly 8 now, and does a bit of resource guarding and wanting to "own" the world around her. She has at times tried to enforce her will on other dogs through growls and the occasional lip curl (for which she is corrected). I am proud to say that in the 10 days since we've moved into MIL's place, Tori has behaved like an angel. MIL has a shih tzu or lhasa apso (sorry, I can't tell them apart) who is VERY territorial. He barks, growls, and tries to bite if anyone gets too close to "his" person (my MIL), the toybox, the food bowl, the staircase (???), etc. He has lunged at Tori several times, even biting her on the lip once. To her credit she has not once responded with anything remotely negative. No growling, no lip curls, nada. She often lays down and rolls over for belly rubs when the little dog is around, and does not respond when he is less than friendly to her. Once she picked up his rawhide, but I said "leave it", and she immediately dropped it and walked away.
Goes to show you how important training and socialization are to all dogs: I am quite certain that if Tori were behaving like the small dog (or even responded in kind to his aggression), no one would consider it "cute"; they would be calling for euthanasia. Love my girl!!!
