Jazz and I set off this morning on our 1 hour drive to the farm where he would do his herding instinct test. There was some very loud whining going on during the entire drive. At one point I said to him, "You better herd your a$$ off when we get there for putting me through this!"
We got there early so I took him for a walk and we could see a Border Collie herding a flock of sheep on our left. On our right was a giant white rock. The giant white rock was extremely fascinating to Jazz. I'm thinking at this point, "I don't see this going well." We walk out to the ring and the evaluator took us to the larger ring. There were 4 sheep. Once we got in the ring Jazz suddenly became much more interested. She told me I could let him off leash so I did. He looked at me, then the sheep, then me again, I said "your free" and off he went herding his sheep. He had a blast and boy did he work hard. He looked like a natural and showed no hesitation. It was really amazing watching this city boy do what he was originally bred to do! The evaluator gave me the stick/rod and let me work it too. It was fun to be part of it. I unfortunately forgot my camera so I didn't get it on video but I will in the future because I plan to bring him back and have him do it again along with my other dog Bunny. We had an awesome time and Jazz earned his Herding Instinct Certificate! Evaluation: Style-gathering Approach-runs moderately wide Eye-medium Wearing-shows some wearing Bark-works silently Temperament-readily adjusts Interest-very keen interest Power-sufficient for stock Responsiveness with Handler-responsive to guidance/control Grouping of Stock-adjusts position Balancing Stock-keeps stock grouped/regroups

Isn't it the most fun you've ever had with Jazz?? Sounds like he did a great job. The first time I saw Stosh in the pen with sheep and he knew what to do, I was amazed- it was so cool. And you're right, it's very addictive!
