Default Zeb Did Awesome at the Dog Park

Hey all. I just had to share this. For the past year Zeb has been showing aggression towards other large dogs. We joked that it was because he thought he was a cat, but it got pretty serious. We took walks along routes where no one was, couldn't take him into Petsmart or anything. He would lunge, bare teeth and bark. I have been working very hard with him and a trainer for about 5 months or so and yesterday I was so happy I cried.

Our town just opened up it's first dog park and we took Zeb at a "down time" when not alot of people/dogs would be there to see how he did. He'd been well behaved with our neighbor dogs and on walks so we went to see. I couldn't believe how AWESOME he did. We went for a short 1/2 hour (baby steps ) and he sniffed the dogs, chased after a ball, even play/wrestled with a lab. He did not growl or snarl or anything. At the 1/2 hour you could see he was getting tired and so we left before he got grumpy. Seeing him play with the other dogs was the most beautiful thing I've seen in so long. I literally started crying tears of joy as I watched. I never thought I would be able to bring him to the park again and let him run. I'm going to make an effort to get there at least 3 times a week during slow times and let him run. He was so happy the rest of the day. My good, good boy.

Does Zeb only show aggression while on the leash?

My Freddie, a lab/shepherd mix was very aggressive toward other dogs when I would take him for a walk on the leash. But at the dog park, where he was free to roam he was fine.

I think he was just being fearful or defensive. Maybe he was being protective of me?

Could Zeb be being protective of you?
