DNA is the only way to tell that I know of. You can do it through AKC, or a more general dog DNA test (there are many of these--I'm not sure how reliable they are).
There are many black and silver dogs in the GSD world. It's a result of low pigmentation in the fur so it isn't as desirable as the rich red and tan colors that the standard calls for, when you have your black and tan dogs.
