I have a female Black and Tan. She's only 9 weeks now, but we are thinking of breeding her in a few years when she's older. According to her pedigree her Sire was black and tan, and her dam was solid black from an all black and tan line. Meaning her dam had the two recessive genes. Does anyone know if there is a test to determine whether or not my pup carries the black recessive gene?
Yes - you can do both a DM and color gene test from the same swab - I use the lab Lisa cites.
There are plenty of threads here on responsible breeding.......it is a great place to learn about the breed from experienced people, as well as the downfalls of poor breeding....you have plenty of time to read before she is old enough to consider breeding.
your pup carries a copy of black/tan and a copy of black. There is no other possibility for her. Since she is b/t, she obviously carries the gene for that. Her mother is black, meaning that all she could pass on is that gene.
If the dam is truly all black then your pup must carry the all black gene now. She carries black and tan and all black like others said. I wouldn't do any testing as that is clear if the parents are truly that color. I'm assuming you didn't see either parent?
