How do you know what type of line?

I was wondering how you know what type of line a dog is based on its pedigree? I'm new to all this - when I was a kid we had a few shepherds (back in the 80's and 90's) and I don't remember there being different lines back then. Or at least it wasn't as big a deal. How can you look at a pedigree and know whether a dog is ASL, WGSL, WGWL, DDR, etc?

kennel or registered names are usually a tip off(titles as well)

It's not easy to a novice. Or an expert.

But if the dog has a Ch. In front if their name, probable ASL.

If the dog has a VA in front if their name, probably a WGSL.

Working lines are tougher. It comes down to recognizing big kennel names.

It comes down to being familiar with the look of the different lines and the kennel names, and it takes a while. After seeing a lot of pics of dogs, and looking at a lot of pedigrees, and reading a lot about the different lines, you start to recognized some of the physical characteristics of each line and get to know some of the naming schemes and kennel names from each line.

Titles are a clue, as you would most probably find conformation titles on show lines, and IPO/SchH titles on working lines, but they are not as reliable an indicator. A show line dog can earn working titles - and a working line dog may earn conformation titles - so going on titles alone can be confusing.

Yeah, Lucia, I've sort of come to the same realization. One of the lines we are looking at is WGSL, but they also have lots of IPO/SchH titles. Also a bunch of V's and VA's. I'm 99% sure it's a WGSL, but I haven't asked because I don't want to look silly! We're pretty sure we've picked a good 'un, but there's always that doubt...

I would actually prefer to get a working line (probably more like the dog we have now) but hubby and I are new to this. A major point for us right now is seeing the kennel and meeting the parents. And all the working line kennels we're interested in (vom Bonach, Shraederhaus (did I get that right? , etc) are a 7-8 hour drive, each way, from us and hubby doesn't want to do that right now. Maybe the next dog...
