a dog is a complicated combination of genetics for all the different purposes .
There are a great many concerns and lectures , Oirschots for example, and the Canine Diversity study , which ring the bells of alarm saying that "purebred" as a concept , which is historically recent in all animals whether farm or companion, is nearing an end because of the narrowing of the genetic diversity and problems being concentrated.

Lab rats are a result of extremely narrowed genes - and they are themselves isolated specific strains such as Wistar or the Sprague - Dawley . They need to be bio-identical as much as possible to provide for a common base with which to work.

Horses- the Rocky Mountain that I mentioned which I have had and did a few mentored breedings , has changed quickly when it suddenly exploded in popularity (just like the GSD ) and when colour had a $$$ premium (chocolate with flaxen mane and tail -- just like the GSD black and red) breeding became prioritized to getting colour , and temperament - changed , and because of closer breeding the Rocky Mountains now have terrible eye problems.
I no longer bred because I did not want to contribute to the greed - commercial side of things. When I was breeding the young horses would go to Pleasure Valley , a trail riding outfit .

Seems like the same thing happened to the pit. For a while everyone wanted red nosed. And now it's all about blue. Blue blue blue everywhere. It's causing all kinds of health and temperament issues.

Many GSD's were lost in WW2, so there were fewer choices for breeding.
