Its my opinion that Balen is West German Working Line. He looks very typie in the face. Not every dog is going to confirm exactly to breed standard. Thats why dogs are shown and given a confirmation rating. His ear set is very similar to Ruger's which is slightly wide but if you saw him in person you would not give his hears a second thought.

Since your comment, I've looked at a bazillion pictures and videos of the west lines and he does resemble them in build more than any other type of working line. He also has a very high prey drive, which I've read the west lines are noted for. To bad there isnt a way to DNA him.
