As I watched this video it was hard to believe that so many great dogs came from this guy! I really have to think that the females he was bred to had to be the secret to his success.

That is true with any dog that continued on through many family lines. They need good bitches brought to them. Fero was also helped a lot by the breeding to Askia vom Froschgraben that produced Troll and Timmy bösen Nachbarschaft. You also have to remember that most of the great breeding dogs were not at the top. A few, but not most. A good breeder looks at far more than one performance and points in a scorebook.

RobK, can I ask a couple questions about this sport? Right now I know zero but am trying to understand why the dogs are taught to do this in a particular way.

I notice the agitator stands very still when the dog finds him. What if he moves?
I know this is sport and no dogs are hurt in these trials but the dog barks way to close to the agitator. Why don't the dogs keep some distance to avoid being kicked by a real bad guy?
Why is the sleeve on the left arm and not the right which we would think would be the hand with the weapon?

Because it shouldn't matter to the dog if he gets kicked, beyond the dog fighting harder. These dogs are supposed to confront a threat, not run away from it. Avoidance is incorrect.

Because the stick IS the weapon in this scenario. These dogs are not taught to disarm, only take down.

Thanks for answering my questions, Jackie.
So the dog can attack without command if the guy moves?

The dog is permitted to engage the bad guy if he attacks the dog or handler. So, no the dog is not allowed to attack just because the guy moves.

If the helper kneed the dog some dogs would back off and others would nail the guy in the leg (which he would deserve). Since the only protection the helper has is on his arm that would be a pretty stupid thing to do and would not happen in this scenario.

As Jackie said, the stick is the weapon so right handed helpers wear the sleeve on the left arm and left handed helpers wear the sleeve on the right arm.
