I need some help from the experts here. I have a WL GSD, he is UKC. Is there anyway that I can get him his AKC without altering him. I want to breed him to my WL GSD female.

Could you post pictures and pedigrees and tell us why he would be the best male for your female? Could you tell us what you really like about your female and what traits you want to improve in her?

you'll probably then have a better idea about the breeders that are supported on this website and why. Course you can also go look at GSD Rescue Information - German Shepherd Dog Forums < -- click that, if you need to see why once you can show you are a 'responsible' breeder that will never add to that (with your puppies, or puppies from your puppies, and so on) then you'll get more helpful hints and suggestions on how to breed.

My male is a beautiful tall silver sable that has good prey drive and isn't really nervy. He is a quicker learner and eager to please.
http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...02556856_n.jpg My female is a pretty Black and Red that has a lot of light coloring to her. She has a high prey drive, she also has a great nose on her but is nervy. She is very devoted to me as well as the rest of the family. http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...52094182_n.jpg Both are awesome with kids and love to be with my horses. They are starting to learn agility and will also be going into protection training. She is a lot more stocky built than he is. I am hoping that the combination of his lanky build with her stocky one they will make great combined above average built pups. As far as keeping them out of the rescues I have the intention of only one litter a year, if that many. And only after they both pass their OFA's. I already have 4 pre-sold. I have been reading a lot on here about how to write the contracts in the best interest of all involved, including the pups. |

I also think your out of luck with AKC. Some other things to consider, because you like the two you have, which are beautiful by the way, doesn't mean they will produce what you want.
There is more to breeding than wanting those physical attributes. There is also alot of heart ache that can go into breeding. Read some of selzer's past posts about some heartbreaking issues she has had. You also have to be willing to realize that a bitch can literally die in whelp..Would you be willing to take that chance? There are just so many german shepherds dogs, puppies, great breeders out there, why would people buy from this match? (not being sarcastic just a general question) Just so many things good and bad to breeding..

Why would you breed a nervy bitch? The pups will pick it up from her.

I think I misspoke when I said "nervy". She has a lot of nerve, she is the first to check something out and keeps a close eye on all strangers on her property. My male acts big and tough but then relaxes and just goes to one of 'his' humans.

If you want to be a breeder. Learn to critique your dogs temperament and conformation. Decide what traits you like, what traits you want to improve -- there are no perfect dogs. Good thing to. Because if you breed a perfect dog, then there is no way you can improve upon that, and you will be going the other direction, LOL!
There's a lot to consider, a lot to complete. Then you need to find a good stud dog, who is strong (within the standard) where your bitch lacks, and has those traits you most want to produce well, and who lacks only in areas where your bitch is correct. You will also need to understand pedigrees, understand the dogs behind your bitch, and understand which lines she will be likely to produce well within. Understand the dogs behind the stud dog and what they produce. It is a study that will take some time, and a good mentor would be an excellent idea. One who lives near you and you can get some first hand experience with. The breed needs new blood. New breeders. We cannot always leave it to the experts. But you have to go into with your eyes wide open and by doing things right. You cannot breed your male to your female and make AKC puppies. To make AKC puppies, you need to use an outside stud dog, which in fact is generally the most sane thing to do anyway. The chances of raising both male and female from 8 weeks of age, and having the perfect match for each other is probably a hundred thousand to one long shot, even if you went into it buying for the pedigrees you wanted, out of parents with the traits you were looking for. Breeding is really not something you suddenly decide you want to do when you have a pup or young adult. You really should have bought the pup or young adult with breeding in mind, and had you done that registration would not be a concern because you would never have boughten a dog that cannot be registered with the American registry with the most oomph. It is not hopeless, if you are willing to do the work, learn the breed, learn the pedigrees, train and work with her, and find the perfect stud dog for her.

Thank you Selzer. You have been very helpful with this. I understand about the outside help. I wasn't thinking about breeding my stud when I bought UKC. But he has turned out to be a GREAT all around dog. I am working now to get him some Titles. The breeder had told me that she could get him his AKC because the grandparents were AKC but I have seen no follow through from her.

I think that if the sire and dam are not registered AKC or another foreign registry which the AKC has listed as willing to accept, you are not going to get papers for your pup. Things change all the time though, so maybe there is a new law within the AKC about registrating eligible dogs, though frankly I think that undermines breeders efforts to not provide full registration to people they do not feel comfortable with, or with dogs that might have some issue.
