Hi, I am trying to figure out how to understand pedigree. I just bought a puppy and I can not understand her pedigree. Her father is Hemi vom Oak Ranch Shepards.Hemi Vom Oak Ranch Shepards - German Shepherd Dog I don't really understand what the difference is between VA1 and V as these are the mostly the titles that show up in her pedigree. lastly, if someone could explain what SG6, BSZS, VA2 Thanks to anyone that can help me. I want to learn how to understand pedigree easily but I am sure it is annoying for those who understand to have to read these questions all the time. Also if anyone can tell me if this is high quality or not? ..the mother of my puppy did not have any special titles but her hips were approved and she was beautiful. |

VA, V, SG and G are German conformation show ratings, with VA being the best, then V, then SG, and then G. Anything below G is considered unacceptable for breeding. I'm not sure about the numbers after the letters, I believe it has something to do with how many times the dog was shown and received that rating. Someone more knowledgeable than I am about German Show Lines should come along here shortly and tell you more.
I don't know enough about those specific titles to tell you what they mean, but (and I mean this as a compliment) if everyone who knows as little as you do ended up with a pup bred as nicely as yours is, there'd be a lot fewer problems in the German Shepherd breed. Even if you didn't know what you were looking at, you ended up with a fairly nicely bred German Show Lines dog.

Thanks, yeah.. I was aware the grandfather etc had some champion titles but I just didn't really understand what they were or meant. Hopefully I will be able to learn even more about this dog's pedigree. By fairly nice would you say my pup has average/above average/way above average pedigree? |

I tis a nice German Showline pedigree. Jeck was a great dog, Hobby had good progeny as well. V rating is excellent. But do not discount SG ratings, and that is the Highest rating a puppy can can be given. If there is a number SG-6 BSZS -- that means it was the puppy rated number 6 out of the entire class of possibly hundreds of dogs. Or it was given a rating of SG and number six. VA5 is really good. VA1 is the top dog for the year.
It is not the best I think hip wise, but that is only one piece of the puzzle. It looks like the breeders imported dogs and now are breeding some of their progeny.

welcome to the forum
after you buy a dog is not the time to ask if it is high quality or not . Too late. Most important does this dog have good temperament. Does it fit in , adapt, cope , respond and bond --- then you have a king/queen of dogs , a great companion . Enjoy . Carmen Carmspack Working German Shepherd Dogs |

yes they have great temperament. She is very jolly and not afraid of new situations even though shes 8weeks old. Also I was thinking of doing some type of training because she seems to really like to tug on a rope. I guess Ill have to do the basics while becoming educated about the different types of training I can do.
Thanks for your advice everyone!! very helpful |

Wow go back to generation 4, 5 and 6 and there are some impressive names including Fanto vom Hirschel. Arminius, Wildsteiger Land, Haus Beck, Hirschel and others are in those generations.
They are considered German Showline but those early generations could really work too. Fanto was am amazing dog and truly earned his SchH3. |
