I have owned a few German Shepherds in my life but can't believe how much I still don't know. When I was younger, I really didn't pay attention to the pedigrees just knew the temperament and look that I wanted. I am learning so much now from this forum.
Who can help me understand the pedigree of my pup's sire? I can't find the dam in the database. Thanks!Conan Vom Newtonhaus - German Shepherd Dog

Conan is a mix of American and German showlines. I am not familiar enough with them to comment.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. How can you tell that he is a mix of German and American showlines? I'm really trying to better educate myself.

The champions are AKC show dogs and the V rated dogs are German line show dogs. Conformation titles go in front of the dogs' names.

Thanks for the explanation! So AKC show dogs always means American Show Lines?

Mostly it does. Although some may be a mix of lines.

Sometimes kennel names provide a hint. Usually German lines will have "von", "vom", or "von der" in them. They sort of follow a formula: [dog's name] von [kennel name]. AKC show lines usually follow a different formula: [kennel name's] [dog's name]. AKC show lines will have a CH in front of them, if they were shown and finished their championship. German lines will have a SchH 1, 2, or 3. In Germany, they must have earned at least a SchH1 to be eligible for breeding. You can sometimes tell whether it is a German show line or a German working line by looking at the females in the pedigree. Typically, SL females have a SchH1, while WL females will often have a SchH2 or 3.
